My Uncle has an 1995 f350 extended cab dually that has what I would term as "surging" & it seems to be more noticeable when the cruise is engaged. I have driven the truck & it also does it when the cruise is off, but it is more noticable when it is engaged. The truck also is an automatic if that makes a difference. You can actually feel it & see about a 200 rpm drop on the tach when it does this. Anybody have any ideas?
I was test drivng a PSD that I could feel chattering in certain spots. The salesman could'nt feel a thing. I spoke to the service manager and he told me that when the milage got to 80K some of the 4WD had torque converter problems. Sure enough they had to replace the converter.
On my 96 it starts acting up when its time to change the oil. The firing of the injector is produced by the oil pressure and its imperitive the oil is of good quality and will not foam. NO oil additives should be used unless ford approved as it has been said on this site many times thatthey will mess thing up real good.
If your oil is good sometimes a new cam position sensor can fix many surging, stalling and fail to start symptoms.
Thanks for the advice. You've given me a few places to start trying to narrow it down. The one other thing that I failed to mention is the fact that 3 times in the past two weeks when the truck is started and in park & you hit the accelerator, nothing happens. If you let off & then mash the accelerator again then everything seems to work fine. I dont know if the surging & this problem are related or not.
sounds like a bad spot on the throttle position sensor. its located on the throttle pedal. its just a big rheostat. a bad/burned spot will give a poor reading, thus making the engine surge. why it does it when the cruise is on is beyond me.
Yes the TPS is a rheostat but on my 96 i can't just buy this part I have to purchase the whole petal assembly $500.00 compared to $50.00 for a normal TPS. If it is a dead spot I would enlonglate the holes in the tps and rotate it a little so you are not working the throttle in the same position as usual.
Is it possible that maybe the O-rings in the injector pump are shot? I had a 7.3 that did act the same way and after rebuilding the pump the problem was solved.
