Glow Plug Controller and Glow Plugs

O.K. I'm replacing my glow plugs because they seem to be one of the problems of my hard starting / white smoke on start-up. My question is about the glow plug controller. When I first bought my '89 F250 Diesel (7.3L), the truck started just fine. As time went on, it was harder to start and got progressively worse until it took a good deal of time to start. Just recently, my glow plug light in the cab has gone from a time delay to and instant start as soon as the key is turned in the on position before completely starting the vehicle. What I mean by this is the light goes out immediately after the key hits the second click instead of pausing to let the glow plugs warm up. Is this really my GPC (glow plug controller) or is it something else? And if it could be the GPC, how can you troubleshoot it otherwise? Thanks for the replies in advance!

If all the plugs are working then it should have a time dellay unless the controller is defective. As more plugs burn out the shorter the delay to prevent burning out the remaining plugs as they are 6 volt plugs.

Well, I guess I should have just replaced them first before posting this. Not only does the light come on and stay on for the appropriate time, the truck idles and runs better than it ever did! I'm amazed at how much better it really runs. Any way, thanks for the few tips that you did give and I look forward to finding more great help here.
