Safe chip/tuner for Excursion 7.3 TD

Can anyone recommend a safe tuner or chip for an 01 Excursion 7.3 TD? Is it necessary to upgrade intake and exhaust to use a tuner or six gun? If I were to just install the tuner or chip without intake and exhaust would I still see any significant performance improvements? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

For a chip, go with a 6 position SCT chip:

1 stock, 4 power settings, 1 kill switch setting

For a tuner, all of them are pretty good. SCT is the one for custom tuning, Superchips for the best shifts for off the shelf tuning, Diablo for the best low end power and most features. www.motorhaven.com

All of them have settings that don't require an exhaust, though I recommend you get an exhaust and EGT gauge if you do heavy towing. You'll see huge power gains even without an aftermarket intake and exhaust.

motorhaven guy,
what's better...a tuner or a chip? I don't do any heavy towing, just a lot of beach driving. All I'm looking for is little (as much as the motor can take) kick in the *** when I want it without any exahust or intake mods (yet).
Thanks for the info.

A chip allows switch power settings "on the fly" as you drive, a tuner doesn't. But a tuner includes the ability to pull and clear diagnostic codes from the computer. So it depends on which is more important to you.
