I just bought a 1994 mazda b4000 for a donor for my Bronco II. The engine has a nasty tick. I was planning on ripping the motor apart anyway, but does anyone have any ideas on locating the tick. If it is just one lifter- can they be replaced individually- I noticed a cam and lifter set is too rich for my blood. Thanks- Matt
You can replace them individually if you can locate which lifter is causing the tick. (If it is a lifter.)
Check your rocker arms. It could be that the engine has got sludge build-up and there isn't enough oil getting to the rockers. One way to try to isolate the noise is to take a long-handled screwdriver and hold the handle against your ear while placing the tip on various components of the engine while idling and listen for the tick to get loud through the screwdriver handle.
If it is indeed a lifter, it's a good thing you plan on going into the engine anyway, because you have to pull the heads to remove the lifters. And they're roller lifters, which explains the cost. It might even be that they are gummed up and you could clean them rather than replace.
