It seems my sweet van has a lifter problem. I think. It seems to tick only at certain times and it seems to be getting louder. Goes tick, tick, tick ... stops and then does it again all the time. [COLOR=purple] Anyone else have this probem?

What "certain times" does it tick? Would you classify the tick as lifter noise or spark knock/ping/detonation? Spark knock is fairly common on the 4.0 OHV and can usually be easily fixed. But, lifter noise is also a good candidate on an engine that old. Different causes and different fixes for either one, so need to be fairly certain of whether it's spark knock or valve noise.

what is the difference between a spark knock and a lifter knock it seems to tick in a pattern the noise is coming from the passenger side only ticks twice then stop then ticks again. it seems to only tick when certain cylinders fire thanks 1 2 3 tick tick 6 i hope this helps

ping or spark knock is usually described as the sound of marbles rolling in the engine. Something similar to the sound made by old VW beetle engines. It also usually occurs only under load (acceleration, climbing hills, etc).
lifter noise is a metal on metal clatter that would appear to come from the valve covers.

you sure it isnt a plug wire that has gone bad? ive seen them where they arc at times and then stop for a bit and start arcing again. that could cause a pop noise that is easily mistaken for a tick from a lifter
