looking for help in adding power steering to '51 F1. Has a '65 289 engine.
wondering how i am going to make P-S work on frame & connection to original linkage. Trying to avoid a headache.
If you are keeping the original suspension, I'd look at the Toyota conversion kits. They are available from several aftermarket sources. With a little fabrication you should be able to keep your original steering column...
We grafted a '95 Lumina PS unit on to my '48 F-1. Cut the stock steering column off right below the fire wall, welded on a half-D shaft, got a series of universal linkages and sliding shaft from Borgenson-Mullins, welded the PS unit behind and above the original axle, made all the measurements and such to get it balanced and equal, works like a champ. Originally we had the shaft too long coming out of the firewall and the universal had too big of a angle to make. Broke it off on a shopping mall speed bump, luckily going slow and straight. Now we have the first univesal right below the firewall and the bottom one right above the PS unit. Absorbs the shock much better. The pump is on the installed 350 crate motor.
