Does the power steering system ever need to be flushed? How do you do it? My Haynes makes no mention.

 

I unhooked the return hose from the bottom of the pump and pointed it down into a bucket as best as I could. I then took the cap off the pump resivore and poured Valvaline synpower power steering fluid in the resivore as my daughter turned the steering wheel from one side to the other with the engine running. Once the old brown and red fluid quit coming out I put the hose back on and topped it off. It takes awhile to get the air out of the system but once it was worked out there was no more whinning and it has worked great ever since. Make sure you buy enough fluid (you can always bring back the extra) and keep in mind that it is a somewhat messy job.

 

I dont know if its just the ford power steering sound or something but my steering pump is SOO anoyingly loud! Is there something I can do cheaply to stop that sound?

Doing what I explained in my earlier post complety took care of any noises coming from the pump.
