So do you think I need to swap the cam out to a new one? There a good chance the old one is truly junk because of the lack of oil changes over its life time correct? If so I will just leave it sd for now and buy a sd cam for it.

Any tips on buying a sd cam kit?

I thought you were wanting to swap in an entire HO engine from a mustang. I wouldn't just replace the truck cam because the oil wasn't changed regularly. That's assuming you are talking about the truck cam being worn from lack of oil changes.

The mustang has a roller camshaft with roller lifters, so it is less likely to be damaged by dirty oil. Take the HO engine that you were given/bought/whatever, get roller lifters, pushrods, and rockers for it and install it in your truck with the truck intake manifold and wiring and computer. The stock HO cam should be alright on the truck speed density setup until you can afford to convert to MAF. Don't bother with swapping cams; it's too much hassle to swap it twice. Just wire the spark plugs in the HO firing order; the injectors will take care of themselves since the truck computer fires 4 injectors at once.

Why do you want to swap to MAF? There is really no "performance gain" to be had by swapping it on a basically stock motor. Unless you are radically changing the engine (i.e.-stroking it, aftermarket aluminum heads, larger than an HO cam ) your existing SD should work just fine.

Are you going to be drag racing this truck? If none of the above applies, I would re-think the situation. Just trying to save you some time and $.

How will running the H.O. cam effect the truck?

You will not need to switch to MAF for those minor mods, as long as you don't install anything bigger than an HO cam. It is more to do with the vacuum the engine produces....bigger cam - less vacuum.

A correctly tuned SD will run as good as MAF.

Spend you $ elsewhere..........just my two cents.

True, I just thought it would help smooth out the engine revs, and again a bit better mpg.

Im starting to rethink the the ma swap, because I could buy a lift kit for about the same price.

I was thinking I'd have to do a MAF conversion on mine as well, and to that end I found a '95 Cougar in the boneyard with MAF. I could have all the stuff I needed for $250. But in rethinking, I decided the build was too mild to need it. I might go MAF later, if I change the intake, throttle body and injectors. Of course, that would allow me to change the cam, too.

I used mildly ported GT40P heads, long-tube 1 1/2" headers, and a Crane 444211 SD-compatible cam. Other than that it's all stock so if that combo doesn't cause a problem for the SD system, I don't see why yours would.

Yeah, spend your money elswhere. When you're not looking for a MAF conversion, one will probably just fall into your hands cheap!

I know I need new roller lifters, but are the pushrod & rockers off my truck any different, and is it ok to use them over?

How would 1.7 RR work in this application?

Is there something wrong with the lifters you have? Roller lifters can be reused, as the roller on the bottom of the lifter doesn't "wear in" to the cam like a flat lifter does. And yes, you can reuse pushrods and rockers.

I'd stay with the 1.6 ratio.

I want to use the H.O. cam, and I thought that my truck engine wasn't a roller. The H.O. I have didn't come with lifters pushrods or rockers so Im forced to buy roller lifters.

Plus wouldn't it be safer putting new ones in? I would love to save the cost of new lifters if I could, I have another 302 but I dont know if its a roller if it is I could use those.

I'm losing track...I gotta sit down and re-read this thread from the beginning

If you've got roller lifters somewhere, you can reuse them if they're still in good shape (read this thread if you haven't already) otherwise yeah, you're stuck buying some either new or used.
