i was wondering how long will stock roller lifters last. what should i look for when inspecting them. i got a local dismantler with 4 5.0 H.O. engines and i would like to use the lifters in my new engine. since they are like 5 bucks.
I re-used mine on a rebuild at 145,000 miles. I just took them completely apart and gave them a thorough cleaning. They looked fine to me and I've put another 30K on them so far.
The only time I ever heard anyone having a problem was after a 6500 rpm run. You could look at the roller to make sure it turns easy. The 2 rings on the side should be clean with out score marks. Bring a can of brake cleaner to hose them down.
I went through mine when I rebuilt the engine (no idea how many miles were on it.)
I took each one apart and cleaned and inspected them, since quite a few were sticking. I had to replace one lifter because the piston was cracked, so I was glad I'd gone to the trouble rather than just cleaning them and sticking them in the motor.
