you could also pull the axles out a little bit undo the 3rd member and pull it back some and let it drain. dont try to pull it off by your self (atleast use a jack) as it is heavy as crap. clean the mating surface and use RTV and bolt everything back up.
no its not fun but doable. i also replaced the leaking pinion seal while i was doing it. you can also add a drain plug like i did. i drill a 3/8'' hole on the bottom and welded a 1/2'' nut over it and used a stubby bolt inside of it. it works well and i just sealed it with teflon tape.
