We have a 2000 F-250 that the four wheel drive stopped working and every now and then while driving down the road the 4x4 light will come on. Also the ac and heater controls act up. Is this a vacuum pump? If so how hard is it to fix and the location?
By the way, the four wheel drive works but you have manually lock the hubs.
The location is under the hood, on the inside of the passenger-side front fender. From what I have read, it's a pretty easy job to change. I have these same symptoms, and I need to change mine too. Just haven't gotten around to it yet....
A lot of people on here recommed changing the junk OEM hubs for WARN hubs and plug up the vacuum lines so you'll never have to worry about it again.
But, do you then lose the automatic locking ability of the hubs? I personally don't mind. I usually just keep them locked when I think I might need them off road or when bad weather threatens, but the idea of auto locking hubs appeals to others.
If you put the War hubs in you will lose the auto feature. I like mine. You may not have a vaccuum pump problem but a vaccuum hublock solenoid going bad. Take the vaccuum line from the pump going to the reservoir and disconnect it. The vaccuum pump should start running, put you finge over the end and it should quit. I really don't have a way to test the solenoid. The vaccuum hub lock lock solenoid p/n 6C3Z9H465 BA cost me $51 dollars.
Had the same problem too.Mine turned out to be the vaccum hub solenoid. My hubs are also going bad. They where so tight I could'nt turn them by hand so I had a pair of duck-bill vise-grips and grinded the sides down so they fit the whole surface area of the turn portion of the hub.Worked pretty nice.Once I got it broke free I shot some WD-40 around the area to loosen it up. I may have not done the right thing by using the WD because I'm pretty sure there is a o-ring inside the hub, But at the time I was a little frustrated . I'm sure that I'm not alone. I like the auto option but I will be replacing mine with the Warns soon.
