Electronic Engine Components
Also, if I get a shop to rebuild an engine for me will they automatically install chips or other electronic components?
Thanks,
BillBob
Also, no a shop will just reuse the points distributor
First off how much knowledge of mechanics do you have? I am definately NOT making fun of you but trucks (ford)up to atleast to 83 dont have that much electronics. The only thing that the computer controlls up to then is the Ignition and there is only a very fey parts too it. Coil, pickup coil(in the distributer),Ignition module,(dont get scared becouse of the word module)and ignition switch. These are very easy to diagnose and change if they mess up. Your local auto zone will test the Ignition module and tell you if its bad. None of these parts are expensive, if I remember correctly none are over 50 bucks. I just wanted to let you know that the reason ford left points is because they were outdated and needed upkeep (you have to gap them and keep them clean ect. These Electronics have very little upkeep and last much longer than points. So dont get scared away from the Electronic Ignition setup, unless for some reason you love to constately screw with your ign. system.
I really hope this helps

If you get a machine shop to rebuild your motor they would NOT install any computers or any chips. The computers are not in the engine itself they are hooked up to sensors that go onto the motor. Up to ford 83 models (that I am sure of) there are not any computer controlled sensors. The only sensors are ones like the coolant temperature sensor and Oil pressure sending unit. The things that a machine shop would do is - a valve job if your heads are still good, bore cylinders, Install bearings, put in internal components like the cam, pistons, crankshaft ect. Also they should not do any job you do not approve.
Hope this helps too!

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
There are no "CHIPS" in 73-79 trucks. Yeah, there are some electrical components but you can't swap chips to enhance performance. These trucks are virtually as "old" as old school gets. They are as pure as Ford ever was and as great as ford will ever be. If you own an old ford truck you'll never get rid of it and if you do you probally shoiuld have owned it in the first place. My neighbor just ask me the other day," Who owns all those old ford trucks in your back yard?" I proudly replied,"There all mine!" Big blocks,Small Blocks, Rusty and Prestine there the greatest thing I've ever seen!
Good Luck, Have Fun,
