Cruise Control

I have a 2004 F-150 XL 4.6l V8 and was wondering if the cruise control components are installed on the truck even though it doesn't have cruise control. Someone told me a long time ago that even on slim down models they put in the same electronics but just don't add the actual buttons because it's cheaper that way and they don't have to have multiple sets of harnesses, electronic components, etc. Anyone know if this is the case on an XL model?

This is a work truck that my company gave to me and I really want cruise control but they bought an XL with no options except A/C.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Brad

Post Yes, It's Available As An Accessory

Your Ford parts department will order the accessory wheel kit. You can look it up at

http://www.fordaccessoriesstore.com/...nsumerHome.asp

I had this done on my 2005 XL. Everything is pre-wired. They have to update the vehicle configuration in the computer - I had the dealer do it.

Get the leather wheel. save big bucks.
E-bay ad number;
7994512950
search with that number. They have these on there all the time.

Search on adding cruise for all the details on putting one in. Easy mod.
Dealer will charge you 35-65 bucks to 'turn it on' in the PCM after you put it on.

Can't find what you are talking about with that eBay item #.

Anyone else with other suggestions?

These are auctions. They run for a few days and then end. I searched for F150 and steering and here are a couple from the same place. They run one at a time from this guy.

The vendor is named "auto parts direct"

79966668932 this wheel would be right
7996679164 this wheel has the radio and climate buttons, you don't need.
This forum does not allow ebay links so search for these numbers, or just search for
f150 steering

notice they also fit navigator/expy.

Why do I need the whole steering wheel? Don't I just want the buttons to put on my current steering wheel? I have spots to put them they are just blanked off. Also if I get that steering wheel how to you work around the Airbag? I don't want to mess anything up. Also once the buttons or steering wheel is installed how to you activate the cruise control? Is this something someone can do at home with a program and a cable to connect to the truck?

You don't really want the the whole wheel unless you are going to leather, which is hugely better.

The switches are not sold seperatly, and you would have to take the wheel off to put them on.
Same job.
I've done about 8 so far.

If you are not 'tool handy' you can have it done for about 50 bucks. Takes about ten fifteen minutes to do. Needs a 8 mm socket on a quarter inch drive setup, a steering wheel puller, an 8 mm wrench to take off the negative battery cable. a 50 torx head socket. Air bag removal is pretty easy.

No you can't program it at home. Can bus is not simple, and they don't really want you playing around in the PCM.

Usually costs 35-65 to have the dealer 'turn it on' in the PCM.

Or if you can find a dealer that actually knows how it works, you can buy the same wheel with the buttons for 162 (list), and pay 85 to have a dealer put it on, and then 35-65 for them to turn it on. Your call.

This brings up a question I have....is the wheel also pre-wired for the stereo and climate control or is the climate control only available when it has ATC?

Nope. One guy in another forum changed the clockspring and added the other switches, but then unless you have the climate control that still won't work, and you need the right radio.

Chris,

I have all the tools to do that except the puller. Will any type of puller work or does it need to be a special steering wheel puller? So it sounds pretty easy. I guess I'll get it installed and then on the next oil change I'll have them program it.

I really appreciate all your help.
