I have an 88 ford F-150 4x4 into which i put a 460 big block out of an 86 F-250 ( the tranny that cam on this motor went out last week! ) . My problem is that i want to put in an automatic trans with overdive, but it needs to work on a carburated motor. Where would i find one , or is there even a tranny out there like that, if not what is the best manual trans. out there that will work on my application and still use my t-case and drive shafts?
Not sure if you can keep your stock drive shafts in any of the swaps but I have a complete C6 4x4 set up from an 87 F250, if you still need one. It came from a running truck that had got hit in the rear.
The best manual trans would be the ZF. As for an auto with OD the E4OD is very exspensive to rebuild and are known to be weak and you will need a computer for the trans or it will not shift correctly.
The ZF Trans......Is there only certain years that will work on that motor or what? I guess to be honest i dont know ***** about manuals, except i can drive one. are they pretty easy to get ahold of?, like off ebay or something?
To my knowledge, there is no automatic OD tranny that will bolt up to that 460. Your choices are the C6, and a couple different manual trannies. The ZF is the only one that has overdrive.
If you're set on having overdrive, then the ZF is pretty much the only way to go. The NV4500 is an expensive option because of the adaptors necessary.
They should be pretty common. Check your local junkyards. The downside about buying one off ebay is shipping the thing. Be careful you don't get one that was behind a diesel. They will bolt up, but the ratios are all wrong for a gas motor.
If you have an automatic now, then the swap is more difficult - pedal assembly, driveshaft lengths, crossmembers, master & slave cylinder, etc.
The 4x4 ZF 460 tranny is tough to find unless you want to pay top dollar for one.
I bought one last spring and just a few months back there were two more with in driving distance of me in Ohio. I almost bought them just to sit on them. They sold for around $300 a piece which was a very good buy.

Then let me increase your knowledge.
Ford built many, many trucks with an E4OD bolted to a 460. They were in the Fseries and E series from 1988 through 1996.
The hard part of this swap, as was mentioned above, is that the E4OD is computer controlled. Without a computer it won't shift, it will just stay in fourth gear.

Maybe it's my imagination, but I'm picking up on a little attitude on this one...
I am fully aware that the E4OD is an automatic tranny and that it was available behind a 460. However, his 460 is carbureated and not EFI. As we all know, the same computer controls runs the engine and the tranny. Since Ford never made a standalone controller for the E4OD, he would have to go with an aftermarket tranny controller.
I didn't intend any attitude. I'm sorry if I offended you, I didn't mean to.
The E4OD that was used with the '88-'94 IDI diesels had a Ford stand alone controller. I owned one, but it's gone now.
The engines were not computer controlled, but the trans was. A TPS would need to be installed on the carb linkage to get it to work with a carbed 460. It would take some fabricating, but shouldn't be too hard.
The Baumann would be a good choice. It might be easier to install than the Ford controller, but I'll bet it needs some go pedal input, too.
the bad deal is is that dads pickup gave out a year ago and it had an E4OD that had only 5000 miles on it and the motor took a crap. can i change the bell housing to get it to work? i still have the tranny and the t-case.
An AOD is non-computer controlled. Two problems with connecting this to a 460:
First, the bellhousing is integral with the case. It is not removeable. An adaptor could be amde, but that leads to the second problem. The second problem is that a 460 would twist apart an AOD in the first 10 miles. It is a light duty trans and won't hold p to a 460.
