Keys in ignition chime sticks

The keys in ignition chime sticks on my 94 ranger (old type key cylinder). If I take the keys out it still chimes when the door is open. If I hit the key cylinder it stops, but will stick the next time I drive.

I have replaced the ignition switch, and sprayed WD40 in the keyhole, but the problem reamins.

I plan to remove the steering wheel next, but thought I would see if anyone has any first hand experience with this problem.

P.S. I want to fix this problem not just disable the chime.

Thanks in advance.

I think you can take the colume cover off and disconnect the wire going to the ignition switch area and stop the chime. It has been awhile since I have been in one but that is what I remember. You shouldn't have to pull the steering wheel.

There's a little switch up there, like wtroger said, you can probably clean it.

I have my chime disconnected... I looked briefly at the problem when I replaced my ignition lock cylinder. This is on a 93 ranger - if you remove the housing from the steering column, there is a single wire leading to a tiny contact that sticks into the lock. It will pull out of the lock - apparently sticking the key in the ignition causes this contact to be grounded.

I don't know if its bent, missing an insulator, or what - it appeared to be touching to ground all the time. It wasn't really worth the time to me to troubleshoot it. But that's where I would be looking for the problem. I have no idea what the arrangement is in later trucks...

What about for a 99' Ranger? And is this in anyway connected to my intermittent windshiels wiper settings being disabled and the windshield washer switch not always working?

I would suspect the multfunction switch for wiper problems.
