ok, i have a 94 f-250 4x4 w/ a 351 and a ZF 5 speed. the tranny i have has a internal slave cylinder...another great invention by ford! grrr! no offense but sometimes i wish some the engineers had to actually work on a truck so they would know how to design a easily maintainable truck! again i mean no offense to anyone who likes the "brilliant" ideas that ford has every once in a while.
i have to remove the tranny just to change the slave cylinder! but a guy i know has an about the same year f-350 (maybe a 95 or 96) 4x4 w/ a powerstroke. it also has the same tranny only the slave cylinder is external and from its looks the transfer case seems to be bigger. does anyone know if these trannys were only on the f-350s or were there some on the f-250s as well? i am dropping in a 354 perkins diesel here in a few weeks and was considering trying to find one of these external ZF transmissions...what are your thoughts???
I beleive there are 3 versions of the ZF and they are engine specific not F-series specific. I'm sure someone with more tranny knowledge will chime in.
ok thanks...yes i hope someone else will help. since i am doing a radical engine swap i can use whatever tranny i want b/c i have to have a conversion plate machined out so i can bolt up a ford tranny to the combine diesel engine. drive shafts might be a problem though.
Tim is right, there are 3 different versions. One bolts up to small blocks and has an internal slave cylinder. The other is used behind the 460, and I also believe it has the internal slave cylinder. The other is used behind the diesel, and it's slave cylinder is external.
