I have a friend who says in '88 or '89 there was an optional 5-speed available other than the ZF in the F250. He says it was a cast iron case, external slave, tranny made by New Process, maybe available only with the plow option. I can't find any reference to it. Does anyone know if this tranny really existed (I guess my friend might have had a 4-speed)?
Also, are all the ZF trannys internal-slave-cylinder rigs?
Roy,
All the ZF's I have seen are internal slave but I've only worked on 5-6 of them...
That being said i've never heard of NP making a HD 5spd for the 8th gen f250s/f350s but i could be wrong about that... Just never seen one or heard of anyone on here mentioning one... I'm sure other senior users will jump in but I believe 87 was one of the last years for a 4spd before all 250/350 trucks got 5spd zf's... I have heard some of the light duty f250's might have been mated with the M50D though...
Owning an AAMCO in 15 yrs never saw any such trans, and I was the rebuilder for all standards that came into the shop. Phoenix is a "truck" driven area also. Did tons of M50's but no Np Trans.John
If NP made a solid cast 5spd option there would be alot more guys on here talking about swaping their M50D to a NP 5spd... Another fact that would lead me to believe it doesn't exhist.
AAMCO!!!!!!!
I'd think Dodge would be about 80% of your business then! LOL! LOL!

This is true, my '90 F250 was the 'light duty' version which came w/ the Mazda 5 speed tranny. I purchased the truck from the original owner so I'm positive that it was the original drive train in the truck. I'm now setup w/ a ZF-5 trans which works so much better in the F250, especially w/ the 3.55 gears.
My '89 F-250 is one of the light duty 3/4 tons with a 302 mated to a M5OD-R2...Original engine was just swapped for another 302, and the tranny is original as well.
A bit anemic for the truck, but it seems to work...
Only the small block ZFs had an internal slave. The 460 and diesel versions used an external slave.
I don't know of any other 5-speeds available in these trucks.
Double thanks... I'm not a BB or diesel guy so those are the areas I am usually wrong about... Dad might be getting a diesel though so hopefully that will change!
