Everyone has been great with suggestions of the little problems I have noticed on my New (used) Exp.
I thought I would toss this other little issue out and see if anyone has seen it (can't find it in the search).
On the overhead console of my 2000 EB, the temp sensor reads high after the engine warms up. It is fine when cold but after 5 or 10 minutes it reads 50F. The dealer said the module is likely in need of replacement. I think it may be the sensor or the wiring. But before I ran out and started swapping parts I thought I would see if anyone had come across this before.
Does anyone have an idea of a good source for the wiring for the overhead unit? I recently bought a Haynes book and it doesn't appear to be in there. Thanks,
Go to your local library and see if they have "Mitchel" (I think that is the correct spelling) in the reference section. These are true automotive manuals similiar to the manufacturers books.. Wiring details are usually good. If not and you do your own work I recommend buying the Ford manuals for your year truck.
Most likely your speed sensor is not communicating with the console or the temp sensor's just gone bad. The it's supposed to read the speed sensor to account for the change in engine temperature & wind speed.
I wish I could tell you how to fix it. Mine was doing the same thing, then sat for about 5 months with a dead battery. When I replaced the battery in October, the temp reading was right on & it's been fine since.
Do a search on the web for Ford Explorer overhead console. The wiring diagrams are out there. It's pretty simple, only 5 wires, as I recall. It's also in the Haynes manual, it's just not very clear. I don't have mine handy, but I'll try to find it this weekend, if you still need it.
Good question. I too have noticed that my temp reading is about 4 degrees cooler than it actually is. When the temp gets hotter, over 70 degrees, it seems to be exact. Less than those temps and its seems to be off. I would hope that this would be an easy thing to fix, sensor or something. Anyone else run into this??
I did actually switch the temp sensor out the other day and it didn't change anything. Still read high.
I had done some reading and saw that somehow the engine temp/speed is tied to that sensor but I wasn't sure how.
I am pretty sure it is related to temp because when the engine is cold, it reads fine (at any speed). When it warm up it is always at 50F (even if I am sitting in a parking lot for a while). It kinda looks like this is going to be a complicated one...
Sounds like a loose connection or a wire that's compromised to me. I had both of the wires going out to the temp sensor break. It read 90 degrees & then flashed ICE. I don't think it's going to be a complicated problem, but finding it's another matter.
