High EGTs

Hello,

I have a 1996 F350 Powerstroke that I bought used. I have added a Banks exhaust brake which replaces the entire down pipe, a FTVB on the automatic transmission, and a 3 gauge pillar mount. The truck has a 3.55 rear end. I had a Jody Tipton 60hp PCM installed, but when towing my 28' fifth wheel my EGTs would constantly go into the red zone, and I would have to back off of the throttle. The pyro probe is mounted pre-turbo. I put the stock PCM back in, and when towing my fifth wheel up a steep grade my pyro would go just to the edge, or slightly into the red. When running empty the gauge can get into the yellow if I get into it on a hill, and when traveling 65 mph the temps are 700-800 degrees (stock programming). Does this sound right, or are my temps too high for some reason? The truck has a cat, but a muffler shop checked it and said that it was not plugged. If I were to try chipping it, I'm afraid the EGTs would get too high, and I couldn't use the extra power, like when I had the Tipton PCM. I have the stock airbox with a new NAPA Gold filter, and the exhaust is stock. Does anyone have any experience in this area, or have any suggestions? I appreciate any insight and/or advice. Thanks in advance!

You need to delete, or gut the cat. Also install an open air element, and at least a 4 inch exhaust. These mods are the first things to do to get egt's down, as well as gauges to monitor everything. Jeff

That is to be expected when running a chip. An upgraded intake and exhaust are the most basic requirements for running a chip...or retuned PCM.

700-800 empty is kinda high...maybe that brake isn't opening all the way?

definatly get rid of that cat and check into getting a better filter system. If your really serious cram in an intercooler.

Definetly ditch the stock box. the added air will help keep your EGT's down, and give a slightly better pulling feel, from the faster spool up.
