Wow, this is a great idea and it looks like a very nice cradle for the filter and holds it pretty solid but I think you have effectively blocked off 40% of the filter's surface area. I think I would want alot more free flow area around the element.
I took a look at the AFE-proguard 7 housing and it seems to have more room inside the housing because of the smaller filter size,I by doing some running around tomorrow and I'll keep a eye on the boost guage,
is there a way you could outfit a snorkle to the outside from your lid? i think its a good start. been thinking about this remedy ever since the first day i put mine on. im thinking on the lines of some sort of duct work to the outside and keeping the water out. keep it up, i havent yet figured out the gallery yet,but hey its only been a little over a year.LOL
i have to agree here... i think you are not going to have enough airflow at higher rpms.... if you look at the AFE stage 2, the air can come in all around the front of the grille by the driver's side headlight... you have sealed the filter off from the engine heat, but where is the air for the turbo going to come from..?
I Know i must have cut the air flow by 40 %. I need to Drill some 2"holes on the two sides and on the back, Or cut the side down alot farther.
But wouldn't cutting or drilling holes into the sides and/or back effectively cancel out what you're trying to accomplish? That is, keeping the hot engine air out and letting cool air in?

yes... but... you have to get air in from somewhere... a snorkel is the way ford got the air to the stock box, you could reuse that...
I agree on the snorkel idea. I'd try to go that route for more and cooler/fresh air, rather than cutting holes in the box that would let the hot engine air in.
maevans, how is that sealed off from the engine bay? the sides of the "box" are lower than the top of the filter.
There is no seal on the top, I'm working on a snorkel to draw air from the front, and seal the top,When i get it done, I will put some picks on.
I have my doubts if I even need a housing, I might leave a good thing alone?
A friend of mine has an intire alluminum (BIG) box around his. I have only looked at his once and I really don't remember much how it is plumbed. I will try and contact him this evening. His 99 really hauls and I am sure he is getting only cool air. I do know that the box has a name scripted on the top and it was not a name I ever remember seeing or hearing of in the past. Maevens you are on the right track, but you really need more open air with isolation from heat. I too don't think that opening up grill area is such a good thing. Along with the ram air you will also get ram water, not a good thing at all.
i think you are halfway there... add the snorkel, seal the top of the box, and then i would also cut a hole in the side and connect it to the fenderwell to make sure that filter is getting plenty of air.... basically you are using an improved version of the stock setup and adding the fender mod for increased air volume availability for the higher rpms...
