engine compartment intake air temperature

FYI.....
Just spent some time taking measurements of the temperature difference between outside air and under the hood air temps. Real world data using the
Intake Air Temperature sensor from my AIS and readings from my laptop with new Autoenginuity diagnostic software(WOW!...Great tool!)
Conditions: Outside temp 19F, truck is '02 F-250 7.3PSD with a Cold Front grill
insert and NO Zoodad Mod:
Crusin' @ 55mph Intake Air Temp was avg. about 5F more than Outside Air Temp. Long idle brought it up to +30F plus or minus 2 degrees F above OAT. Moving from idle to 55mph it took about 3 minutes to reach +5F above OAT.
Having the Zoodad mod with the Kwik filter setup looks to be a real good idea although slow moving on a hot day in the city will obviously get temps up a bit.
IMO, i don't think Kwik filter folks have much of anything to worry about especially when having the Zoodad mod done with the Kwik mod.

Awesome info - thanks!! I have heard that once you are on the road, the underhood temps are only slightly above outside temps - but good to know some actual numbers! I know I have no regrets replacing my AFE stage 1 with the Kwik fliter!!

I didn't think it was getting that hot under the hood. Thanks for sharing the info.

I did a little test today also. Hooked a remote temp sender directly to the filter. Ambient temp was 37 degrees. highway was showing 52-63 depending on speed and wind ect.. Idle at normal operating temps was 65-71. I don't have the zoodad mod yet. I will do that and test it again. This is not as accurate as Nut's, but should give some idea as to what's going on under the hood. I will be traveling south soon, I will try it in a warmer climate and see what happens.

I may try to get the temp sender inside the intake and see what the difference is. Might be worth installing and letting it stay for a while in different conditions. Maybe with some long term numbers, we can put some of the debate about the effectiveness of the 6637 to rest! I will post the results if I do.

Nut, whwer is your AIT sensor located? Master cylinder or under the filter. I'm just wonderin if it would have any effect on the temps being in different locations. It may be worth moving it just to find out.

Hink, you could try putting it in the end of the filter like some have done with the filter minder. Actually, that might even provide the most accurate intake temps for the computer to use too.

JT, I'm pretty sure Nut has the AIS.

That's exactly what I'm going to do. May try to fit the wire in around the filter minder if I can get a good seal. Otherwise, I will make another hole. Filter is do to be replaced soon anyway. I'm thinking about doing the ccv mod tomorrow, might just pull the filter and check it out.

Temp Sensor in 6637 filter

I have some better numbers with Kwik filter. I put the temp sensor inside the 6637 filter at the end by my filter minder. Maybe not the best place, but that was really the only place to mount it.

There are a few more pics in my gallery.

Here is what I did. I installed the temp sensor took it for a drive on the interstate at both 65 and 70 mph, total of about 30-40 miles. Recorded ambient temp, intake temp, mph and boost. I then when home and did the zoodad mod and did the exact same trip again. here are the results:

Ambient Temp: 36 degrees

No zoodad

70mph
3-6psi boost
intake temp: 38-40 degrees

65mph
2-3psi boost
intake temp: 50 degrees

w/zoodad mod

70mph
3-6psi boost
38-40 degrees

65mph
3psi boost
45-46 degrees

city driving
50-52 degrees

The zoodad mod seems to make a small difference at the lower speed and boost. I will repeat this when I can get to some warmer weather. Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out with higher ambient temps.

Good info Hink. I was wondering if the sensor was mounted in the actual air stream into the turbo if the temp would show any diiference to the outside air temp?

Yeah, I think I would get different temps. That was the only place that was easy to mount the sensor. I might try to tap into the front of the filter, at least it would be into more of the airflow. Maybe another day!

I don't think you'd want to mount it directly in the airstream of the turbo. I have seen that it's a bad idea to do that. but can't remember why.

Hink, you beat me to it. What you did was exactly what I had in mind. And it's good to know that, yes it's warmer than a strict cold air intake, it's not that bad.
And we have an intercooler.
Now if someone really wants to lay this to rest they need to strap in several different brands of filter kits and see what the temperature is for each one.
I for one don't have that kind of energy or curiosity. It's simply not too hot for the engine to tolerate, even in rush hour traffic in the middle of Pheonix, AZ.
