Engine warmers

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I would like to have some thing on my truck so when I come out in the morning it doesn't take so long for it to heat up. I have heard of engine heaters, but were do you get them, does any one know a web site? Has any one tried one before and had good or bad luck with one?

Thanks

[font color=red size=2]I have an engine heater on my '73 F100 390. It's very nice on those cold winter mornings, the motor is warm to the touch and I have instant heat when I start it.

There are two types: One goes into a freeze plug hole in the block and the other splices into the heater hoses. Both heat very well. The freeze plug one is cheaper, but harder to install. The heater hose one costs a little more, but is easier to install. Expect to pay $15-$30 depending on the type you get. I have the heater hose type, it's been on there for over 6 years and still works great - but I only use it when it's very cold - I'm kinda lazy that way...

You can get them from Ford (might cost a little more), but Kat's is a good brand that is readily available.

In addition to the above, they also have oil pan heaters, you can check out summitracing for these, most are just magnet or strapped to the pan and plugged in. Use a small magnetic myself, but only on mornings they are calling for around zero or below. Don't get heat right away, but does crank much easier and warms much, much quicker than without. It's that lazy thing in that it doesn't get used all that often! It stays put on a 4x, although I haven't trail tested it.

Blue,
The block heater is an option from the factory. Since the 302 just went out of production a few years ago, I imagine their are plenty of factory block heaters still available from the dealer. They plug into the house on a 110V circuit.

Engine warmers

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Nov-01 AT 00:04 AM (EST)]I'm here in Canada , How many would you like ?
*Grin*

I suggest the In-line heater because the heated coolant gets to more areas of the engine than the Block heater type does.

Don't forget to buy an Heavy Duty Electrical timer the the heater cord is plugs into, to automatically turn it on 1 hour before you need to start the truck!

Do any of you fellows have expierince with the Thermotop ? I think it is german made. Burns diesel and uses battery power to pump the warmed coolant through the engine. Supposed to burn one pint of oil in 8 hours. It would seem a neat thing to have if you are wintering where there is no 110 electricity, or your truck sits out in a parking lot at work all day. DF

Engine warmers

dinosaurfan, they had that thing on shadetree mechanic one day on tv when they installed it on a diesel pickup. They said a diesel pickup can set in the driveway and idle all day, and never warm up. What they hooked up was like a minature furnace with a waterpump and remote control. It was very neat I thought. They wired it up to the defroster controls and it had a key fob remote. Without starting the truck, the little furnace would kick on, then the built in water pump. It circulated warm coolant through the engine and heater core, and would also turn on the defroster controls and blower and defrost the windows and heat the cab too. All this, and the truck engine is not even on. What will they think of next? It did look like a pain to install though, because they had to drop the fuel tank and install a fuel pickup tube for the furnace gizmo.
