Mine is mounted pretty much the exact same as Bear Hunters is. If I were to do it again. I'd just move it back as far as possible as to still get it out of the holder easy. I tend to kick mine alot. But it is always there when I need it and always charged.
I mounting my 3D Maglite on the dash. Left of the steering wheel, and right under the headlight swiches. Kinda hard to explain...but it fit PERFECT, is strong, I can't kick or hit it on/with anything, and is real easy/quick to grab.
I mounted mine next to the driver seat like others. Its very accesable when you get out you can roll out with it in your hand. It was easy to wire up and its always charged.
What are the screws going into for the overhead mount?
the screws are screwed into the cross brace that the over head lamp is mounted to.
to the other questions; i have never had a clap break or the flash light fall out even when banging around off road, i had it that way in my bronco for 6 years and its been in this truck for 5 years. i am not worried about a rollover because i will be wearing a seat belt.

I hate to tell you this, but that's an absolutely foolish attitude. Speaking as someone who's been to many, many wrecks (photojournalist/vol. FF) I can assure you that you WILL move around quite a bit, even with a seatbelt. If you're even moderately tall, there is a very good chance that your head will impact that Maglite... impacting a roof is bad enough, but at least it's smooth - that light will put a dent in your head.
I've seen people killed or more seriously injured by aftermarket accessories (stuff on the panel below the steering column is also particularly dangerous - excellent to shatter a knee/shin, entrap you, etc.) Do what you like, but there's no way I'd put something there.

well then i guess i will put it this way ( and i am sure in your opinion you will think me a fool) i am not going change where the flashlight is mounted because i "might" be in a rollover accident and in that accident i "might" hit my head on the light, i am not that big of a fatalist.
ps. if i wanted you opinion on my attitude...i would have asked for it

How sturdy is that? Can you just pull the flashlight down, or do you have to be careful so as not to rip the cealing down?
With the clamps breaking.....I had my 6D cell mounted on the hump in my first truck (an old chebby shortbed). It took one heck of a beating cause the truck was so light, 3000 lb, and it had a 3/4 ton suspension (basically no suspension). That thing shook so hard that you could hear the batteries rattle over all the noise and it never once came loose or broke a clamp.
I mounted mine (4D) beside the seat like many others. However, I did not want to drill through the carpet and into the floor metal. I made a 14ga sheetmetal mount that bolts to the seat frame and extends mounting pads for the Maglite clips down at the same slope as the floor, about 3/8" up off the carpet. I just used machine screws with nuts and lock washers on the back side to attach the clips to my mount. The mount is held to the seat frame by two 1/4"-28 x 3/4" bolts. There is an area of the frame that is clear of moving parts and plenty thick enough to thread to 1/4"-28. Everything's painted black (black oxide bolt heads.) Looks professional, works great, and no holes in the carpet.
In my crew cab, I mounted it in the back floorboard right in the middle of the bottom of the back of the front seat. I drilled the holes through the hump under the center. Nothing there to bother. Sure hope this makes sense. I like it in the back. In my old truck I had it mounted on the drivers rocker panel right at the bottom of the drivers door. Kept kicking it off when entering and exiting.
jiwth... you have any pics of that bracket? I wanted to mount my mag there, but don't want to drill any holes. I like the idea of the plate for mounting.
Thanks,
Tom
I did mine like Bear hunter.. Problem is my 2 year old used the mounts as a step - broken.., now it's rolling around behind the seat. (Note to self.. buy new mounts..)
