I own a '97 F-150 4.6 L V8 4x4. A Ford garage mechanic diagnosed a torque converter shudder a few months back. No work was recommended at that time, but eventually it would need to be replaced.
Let's assume this diagnosis is correct. I know I'm painting with broad brush, but can anyone give me a ballpark estimate on what this would cost me? Anyone had one replaced before, and if so, what did it cost you? Thanks.
Have you had the fluid changed at all, I've had several that I've serviced and added a good additive to it and fix this problem. It's a lot cheaper to try than a converter replacement.
Excuse my terminology. Chatter not shudder. I don't want to replace the converter. If that mechanic is correct, I may some day need to though.
If anyone with this truck has had a torque converter fail, I'd be interested in hearing about it. I'm not asking for diagnostics, but thanks anyway.
if you have the 4r70w transmission you can service the trans with mercon 5 trans fluid and it should fix the problem. the fluid is breaking down . drain the converter and drop the pan install new filter and it might take a few 100 miles but it usually fixes the consern.
