Fuel Tank 59 Panel

Am ready to replace Moby's original 15 gallon wing tank with a 20 gallon wing tank. Looks like I'll have to fabricate straps. Request any advice/experience in fuel tank swaps. Thanks/Wolf

krautwolf,
Not sure about the wing tanks. My advice is to get the straps from the same application that you got the tank from. I recently installed a tank from a mid 80's Blazer in my 49 (I got the tank for free and it fits great) I went to the wreckignyard and pulled the straps from a blazer and then made the appropriate brackets to hold them. I now have 34 gallon capacity (bit excessive but beggars can't be choosers)

I would imagine that a wing tank should be similar
Good luck
Bobby

I used 2X2 angle iron and zinc plated 1 1'2 flat stock when I mounted the same tank in my '48 panel.

Fuel Tank Ground Clearance.

I'm fitting the tank up and I can get a maximum of 8" ground clearance. Bottom of the differential is about 7", front axle about the same. I think I may be overconcerned. My buddy's Scion Toaster has 7.74" clearance, period.

The clearance on my new tank is lower than the stock tank but it's higher than my running boards so I am not too concerned. The original tank tucked up into the frame. I am keeping the truck stock so it already sits up fairly high. I would be more concerned if I was dropping the truck.

I was wondering if anyone used a side tank like the rangers and f-150 had. Now I know (yes, they are panels, but....). All I ever see are the rear tanks where a spare tire should be. Thanks for the information guys.

Bob,

I the more I look at it the more I agree with you're analysis - as long as I keep a stock suspension it should be OK with the tank a few inches below the rails (but not the lowest part of the truck) as long as I don't take Moby off road it.

I have been doing a lot more searching online for the side mount tanks (sizes in various vehicles and availabilty---used).

I just happened to find a site where the owner used a ranger tank in his. For all I know it might be a member here, but I don't recognize the truck. The gas cap is in/on the drivers side fender where my spare mounts now.

Most of the rangers had 17 gallon tanks that I have seen (my 89 did), but I think some were smaller. For those who are going EFI, the ranger 2.9 started in 85. I believe they had an in-tank pump (would need to be varified). I know for sure the 89 did. I put a carter pump in mine.

A ranger tank should be easy to find (w/pump and sending unit). I assume 17 gallon would be suffiecient with a 302/AOD. Not great, but......it would not sit as close to the ground either.

Hmmm...reverse a second one later and put it on the other side?

Don't know if this helps anyone, but I thought it was a good idea.
