I just upgraded to the silverstars about 2 weeks ago and I love them! They are definitely brighter and whiter than the stockers. Of course the new harness and the diode help too. I didn't want to wait for delivery of a harness, and I was feeling creative, so I just made my own with some 12 gauge wire and a couple relays. It wound up costing me about the same as a summit, or apc harness would. I occasionally had people flashing their hi beams at me before, so after I did this mod I had to re-aim the lights. They really were too high anyway.
I just purchased a 40amp thermal breaker, 2 relays, wire, connectors, and a diode. I did not spend over $30 or $35 so I think. It is worth it to me to make them. I bought in sets of two because I just did the lights on my wife's CJ70. What an improvement, there was a 2.2 volt loss from batt to headlight, now less than .2 volts. Plan on looking for silverstars for both. By the way the f250 only measures about 1.3 volt loss. But like I said before we will find out soon if the plastic reflector lenses hold up to the heat. Maybe I will remember to get my camera when I do this upgrade.

It's amazing the difference that a load reduction relay and some fat wire will do for that sort of thing. I've done it myself on a couple of cars I've owned. I don't know about the melting issue on a 9004 bulb. The ones that I did were the old style H-4. They can take a LOT more heat than the newer plastic ones.
I had recently bought Silverstars, but after some reading I found out that they were the same bulb as the Xtravisions (also by SYlvania), but that the Silverstars have the bluish tint on the bulb giving them that ultra-white appearance. Supposedly that tint can actually make them LESS bright overall compared to the Xtravisions because it filters out part of the light with that tint. I don't care much for the bluish color anyway, so I returned the Silverstars for the Xtravisions (which were half the cost of the Silverstars) and installed them. VERY bright. I already had the upgraded harness with stock bulbs, but it still upped the light even more. Still need to re-aim my lights though.

Kwik, the melting issue is w/ the 9007's into a plastic reflector in our trucks, am I right? The ones I just did for my wife were H-4 glass so no problem there. I think it will be a week or two before I can get to the project though.

That is correct. I like the H-4's a LOT better because they are overdesigned.
The 05/06's use 9008's, and Silverstars are not available in that model yet. In the other Silverstars thread in the aftermarket products forum, someone posted an email response from someone at Sylvania regarding the newer trucks and Silverstars and that they were not available for the newer trucks yet.
In case anyone is looking for a brighter bulb without the bluish tint, I installed my Xtravisions the other night, and saw another jump in the brightness and whiteness of the light, in addition to the upgarded harness I already had installed.
I just noticed the last post in this thread was nearly 4yrs ago, so this question may be relevant now(?)
I'm thinking about upgrading the headlights on my 2002 Exp, and saw the Silverstar Ultra lamps on the Autozone website for $50/pair. Does this sound like a reasonable price for the convenience of buying from a local retailer vs ordering online? Also, according to Sylvania the Ultra is brighter and provides greater downroad visibility than the "standard" Silverstar lamp. Does anyone have any experience with these lights? Just wondering... Thanks for any comments, pro or con.
I'm kinda wondering the same thing... my '99 lamps are pretty pathetic. The driver's side isn't yellow like the passenger side because it got replaced due to a collision with a deer... IDK if I like the look of the '99 lenses better (they kinda grow on you), or if I wanna go with an '02 style lens instead. Is it worth it to upgrade to the '02 lens style? I rode in a F-250 with the clear lenses and they just absolutely blew mine away! I had intentions of doing the '05 facelift to my truck... are those lenses better then the '02 lenses? Can I get more than enough light out of my '99 lenses by cleaning them up and putting either the SS or 55W/100W bulbs and a harness upgrade in them? Also, which are better, the SS Ultras, or the Xtravisions? I know I wanna do a harness upgrade, but I was really leaning more towards 55W/100W bulbs instead because I don't like blue light either. But what I wanna know is this: wouldn't the diode mod not only get the housing even hotter, the but make the bulb alot hotter since it's running both filaments? I don't have the money to fool around with it and see if I blow something up or not... has anybody had any experience with this? Does does doing the diode mod also keep my fogs on with the high beams? I have aftermarket Hella fogs on my truck (99 didn't come with fogs I don't think)? Would a bulb upgrade for those do me any good? They really don't do anything to help... I can never tell if they're on. Sorry for the flood of questions... I hope someone can make sense of it. Thanks!
I did the Silver Stars in my truck about two months after buying it in '04. They're still going strong now and no problems. They did make a big difference but I have been looking at the Philips Crystal vision lights also. They are supposed to be a little better. If I get them, I'll post up and let everyone know how they're doing.
The Silver Stars I bought weren't the Ultras but are much better than the stock lights.
