hey everyone, ive got a 99 superduty 7.3L diesel and i was just wondering if i could get some definite clarification on how i can tell if it is a "99.5" or not. do i just check the stamp on the door, or is there actual mecahnical diffreences, cause the only one i kno of is the different front leaf springs, but no matter where i go they ask if it is a 99.5 or not....prolly a simple quesiton, but any feedback would b great, thanks!
It's pretty hit or miss. The door tag should tell you what month it was built. I had a February 99 build date, but my truck had the later style brakes on it. I bought the truck used so I never knew if it came that way or someone changed them afterwards.
I had read that the early '99s had the PowerStroke emblem on the front fender, and later ones were moved back to being located on the door. I have seen 99s with emblems in both locations.
But, this could be happenstance, rather than someone at Ford saying 'let's move the emblem so folks will know which truck to buy 5 years from now' ;-).
If your air cleaner box looks like this, you "probably" have an early 99.
But to be sure, you can check your intake manifolds, or stamped steel air ducts that actually bolt to the head. Here is a picture of the later 99's bolted up, with an early 99 laying in the valley for comparison.
