I have a 79 F100 with a 351W motor and a Holly 600CFM . Keep fouling out plugs and contant black smoke out tail pipes .I have tried adjusting carb but does not help. Is the 600 too big for my motor ? Its a stock remanufactured motor from Advance Auto Parts.
Also, where did you get this carb? How old is it? How long was it left sitting?
What intake are you using? I'm pretty sure the only engine w/ a 4 bbl intake was the 460. Do you have a 4 bbl intake or are you using one of those god awefull adaptor plates?
If you had a carb that was too big it would have low air velocity in the venturi, draw very little fuel, and run lean. At higher rpm it might be OK. Naturally if you rejetted it richer you could get it to run OK at low rpm, but the it would run rich at high rpm. It would have horrible throttle responce in either case. A 600 is not too big for a 351. I ran a 600 on my mild 289 and it wouldn't bog unless I floored it below 1200rpm.
Most likely you have choke problems, a internal carb leak(floats too high?), wrong jetting, a stuck something or other(secondaries partly open?), or your plug fouling is oil not gas.
I bought the carb new from advanced auto parts. It is a 351w motor. I have an Elderblock aluminum intake. The only adjustment I've done is wiyh the screw on the front metering block everything else is factory set.
yes it has vaccum secondaries and electric choke. Everyone that i talked to and showed the plugs to said that is was running to rich and that is why the plugs were fouling and looked black and sooty.
