As I understand it, FE stands for Ford/Edsel.

Wink Ok

So if FE stands for Ford Edsel, why doesn't FE apply to 302's? At least it doesn't seem to in all cases.

Is the answer because Edsels were gone by the time the 302 came around?

By the way, "freakin expensive" does seem to be a better fit. At least thats what i'm finden out.

Nighthawk, Edsel Ford was one of the Henerys sons or grandsons, (can't remember) The engine along with the car (Edsel) was introduced in 1958. Fortunally the engine has lasted many times over the car, that ran into trouble early on.

Doesn't make much sense why FE doesn't stand for Ford Engine, but it doesn't.

I believe

Yeah. I believe that he was his son. Some of us (sadly) can remember the Edsel and it was actually a pretty decent auto. Kinda like the Tucker but not as advanced.

Poor choice in name, but in some hey, when you own the company.

i remember the Edsel from when i was a kid, my father purchased one new and that winter it got down to 28 degrees below zero and he was trying to get it into gear, it had the pushbutton transmission select in the center of the stearing wheel. anyway the pushbuttons weren't working in the cold and he was just sitting there stabbing at the buttons when it finally grabbed a gear it went forward and knocked a hole in the foundation wall to the house. needless to day the car didn't last long after that. funny how i had forgotten about that until the FE question was brought up.

Proof that sometimes things designed to make our lives easier - don't. Man, that had to be a hard one for the old man take.

I'm more impressed that a late '50s car would start when it's that cold. If I remember correctly, those old batteries weren't much on CCA abilities.
