i heard that drag racers and a few people put a shim in the oil pum p to increase pressure and flow. has anyone done this i have a 87 2.9 ranger and i heard its a simple task. pros cons tec. help would be wounderful.
You shim the spring on the pressure regulator built into the pump- effectively making this spring stronger and boosting the oil pressure.
There's curves for pressure vs flow - more pressure does equal more flow but you can also wear out the oil pump faster and more pressure if you don't need it won't do anything.
well i was thinking that i can use the incress flow to warm up the truck alot quicker in the winter here. i live in va so we have harsh summers and bitter winters. so i was thinking about a oil cooler but in the winter it woulod be like pumping a brick for a hour.
my 86 2.9 with the original oil pump starts up with 40psi oil pressure and 30 psi when warm. its not a h.o. engine why would u need to boost the factory pump?
The reason most racers shim the oil pump is because the engines have looser clearences on the bearings. Looser clearences mean less friction and more power, however it also allows oil to flow past the bearings and hence the need for more pressure. At one time the thinking was lower pressure (it takes power to drive the pump to higher pressures) and more flow. So pumps were "ported" to flow more and lower pressure to gain power.
If you are having heating trouble that is a different matter. You may want to check to see if someone put a lower temp thermostat in the truck.(bad idea)
no i placed a new 195 for the winter in about a week ago. But the friction is a worry. i am starting nagotiation again about getting my ranger sponsered again for shows. And one of the companys that i was going to sign with(before my accident) is opening talk up again with me and offering 50% to 75% on my choice of costom supercharge or turbo for my 2.9. So i am really excited again to look over the terms of contract. But i want to do all possible to avoid and problem since it will be my show and street truck.
