No. Do you know that it is grinding your flexplate? When I had my starter hooked up incorrectly, it basically just revved up the starter, and the noise it made caused me to think that it was possibly hitting the flexplate (I had an E4OD at that point) as opposed to engaging the teeth. I'm just saying that I assumed that I had hooked it up correctly and was wrong. My false assumption made troubleshooting the problem far more of a hassle than it should have been. Keep in mind that I'm just trying to help. I'm not trying to insult your ability or anything. Hell, I just admitted that it was a mistake that I made.
To add to what everybody else is saying, I've also never heard of using starter shims on these engines.

I really do appreciate the help
So did you have it wired incorrectly or was it not seated correctly?
I dont think I have it wired wrong this starter is pretty cut and dry it just has room for a positive and a little spot for the ground. Im not going to put it past myself I have wired stuff wrong in the past. You can see in the ebay pic the only available terminals are, a big one for positive and a one small for a ground.
I dont know, Ive had this thing in and out of the truck 3 times, my stock one works fine.
Im going to guess my starter is bad?

The starter grounds through its attachment to the block. Both terminals are "positive". The big one is energized all the time, and comes directly from the batteries. The small one is for the solenoid, and comes from the relay on the fender. The ring terminals on the two corresponding wires are sized accordingly, but it's still not impossible to get one or the other wrong.
