That is true, but to an extent. If you would like to read up on NTFS and file fragmentation, here is a good article. Info on file fragmentation starts about halfway down. It is still a good idea to defrag NTFS systems on a somewhat regular basis.

That's an excellent analogy Dennis used.

Before you defrag:

1) Go to start=>accessories=>system tools. There should be a disc cleanup feature. Run that first to clean out the "junk." Make sure the "temporary files" box is checked.
2) Then go to start=>accessories=>system tools. Look for the scandisc tool. Open the program, on settings or preferences, make sure the "repair automatically" box is checked. Run the scan disc. edit: skip the surface scan when you get to that part.

Now we're ready to run a defrag. Make sure any screensaver is turned off (ditto power settings, etc- everything on "never"). Turn off virus scan, and you should be ready to go.

wanna not worry about NTFS and FAT32? Run a UNIX-Based OS!

I apologize on my incorrect information, it seems that M$ feed me some bad info on how NTFS is "immune" to defragmentation, another bit of false advertisment...

Where were you when I needed you this afternoon? One of the puters at work crashed..... Well, didn't really crash, just sat there and did nothing. When I rebooted it, it came up with a blue screen (uh oh), and ran NTFS file-checks for half an hour (XP Pro). Great stuff. We got hit with a virus, and it took down quite a few workstations- which makes me wonder what people are thinking when they open up their email.

this comes to mind from when i did work at my high school...

i didn't know that could happen...
after signing a policy stating not to open attachments, i didn't know we were supposed to do that...

and my 2 personal favorites after taking the teacher or administrator's pc to repair...

when will i get it back?
what happened to all my stuff? (They are supposed to do backups, required by policy)

[QUOTE=Mil1ion]Before I defrag, I clean out:
1) All my temp internet files
2) all cookies
3) Recycle bin
4) get rid of all unwanted files
5) shut down any other programs running.QUOTE]

For disc clean up I just right click my computer. Then expolre. Then right click C: properties dick cleanup is there then go to tools on top and there is defrag and chech system for errors.
I do the same as Mil1ion I just toss in registry first aid to get rid of unwanted and unused registry files before defrag. I defrag once a week and my XP Pro 160gb hd is about 60 to 70% full. It takes defrag about 5 to 10 minutes to complete. With norton anti-virus corporate, avg pro, adaware pro and my firewall running.1 though 4 on Mil1ion's list is my am daily chore, before I surf or game online. Gives me time for the coffee to start to kick in. and when it's time for work I let panda, mcafee, and micro trend do there free online scans as back up checks for virus's. I used differnt one a day. I do wifes computer at the same time everyday as mine. Hers takes less time,Windows 98 SE with a 10 gb hd.

Try Ccleaner, it'll do all of these with one click and you can configure it to save the cookies you want to keep as well.

You should (SHOULD!) be able to right-click the icons for them in your system tray (Lower right corner of screen) to bring up a menu with the option to stop, pause, or turn off those applications.

But like I said - sometimes they insist on running anyway, which is why I dumped the one I had.

I dunno if you were around earlier this year when I downloaded a PC game from the main FORD site - that was another one that had to go away.

Power outages can also do nasty things to the drive.
