See what other programs are running- junk going in the background will make it start over constantly. Make sure you're screen saver is off. I run a spyware check, then do a disc cleanup, then a defrag. While defragging I have the network connection disabled, firewall and virus scan turned off.

How full is the drive? In order to defrag, your computer has to move files around on the drive.....If the drive is too full it has no where to temporarily put them..... More ram is better of course.
If the drive is full, it's time to clean out the crap or get another one (the're cheap now) or burn some stuff to DVDs (the're even cheaper)

i think polarbear has it correct, something is running in the background so the defrag keeps restarting, shutoff all programs that are running ie virus scans

Best to defrag while in the "safe" mode also. That's what I do and have been told to do.

That is correct, if you are having problems with the computer not defragging, start it in safe mode. It will take quite some time if you haven't done it in a while too.

When I got this thing I didnt know what defrag even meant and havent even heard the word before I started having problems. I tried to defrag and like 2 days later still havent gotten over 10% done, thats when I decided to scrap the whole works. Found out later that the hard disc I had in here was full and I am sure not defragging in a couple of years didnt help any either.

Before I defrag, I clean out:
1) All my temp internet files
2) all cookies
3) Recycle bin
4) get rid of all unwanted files
5) shut down any other programs running.

just to make sure the puter is working as efficiently as possible.

The speed is determined by what you have that could slow the process down.

Size of HDD and how full it is
Processor speed
memory available

The logic is: to clean it up ....to make it cleaner.

Defragmenting is the process of moving files around so they are in logical order. Your harddrive is made up of sectors that are a certain size. When you write a file to the hard drive, it's almost certain that it's going to take more than one sector to store it. Instead of writing in order, the computer just stores the parts of your files kinda at random, based on what's available. As you delete files and fill up your drive, fragmentation gets worse. A single file can be stored all over the place, meaning that the drive has to hunt around to get all of it when it needs to access it. Since HDs are slow (compared to say main memory) this is concidered a waste of time. By defragging you move the parts of the file around so that when you do need to access files, the HD doesn't need to seek as much and saves time.

A real bad defrag session can be caused by spyware or a virus.

Any time my PC has a tuff time sorting itself out, I begin to think back on any new programs or downloads that have been added since the last successful defrag.

Working with a lot of graphics files, and playing PC games that have intense graphics or that use a lot of CPU capacity can also fragment the daylights out of your files.

You can tap CTRL+ALT+DEL to see what programs are running at any given time.
The icons in your system tray can also give you some clues.

Firewalls and anti-virus programs are notorious for interfering, and one program - EZ Antivirus - I had to outright get rid of, because even when it was supposedly turned off, it still kept messing things up.

Like polarbear asked, what OS are you running? If you are running an NT based system, such as Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, and the file system is NTFS, it does not require defragging

Think of the Hard drive as a messy closet and someone needs to go in and organize it so people know where everything is and can grab it right away.

The Defragmenter is the maid

Just make sure you get rid of all the unwanted files you don't need first.
