ABS Codes/Problems For 1994 E150 Van

Does anybody have a list of the codes and the associated problems for ABS. I will take it to AutoZone but I would like to have some idea what I am up against. How does the ABS work? I assume there is a module that takes input from wheel sensors and feeds it to some type of device that works with/off of the master cylinder?

What code are you getting when you scan? Some of the more common ones have been disscussed before so ig you search the archives for "ABS Code 38" or something like that, you will likely find what you need.

The ABS system on a '94 is only RABS am I right? If so there is one speed sensor on the top of the diff. It also controls the speedo. If your cruise/speedo, and trans are all working fine then it's not the speed sensor.

A '94 can have either RWabs or 4 wheel ABS. I had a '94 Clubwagon that had 4 wheel abs as does my current '95.

Until we know the codes, there isn't much help to be had.

The 4 wheel ABS has sensors at each front wheel and uses the speed sensor on the rear axle. The ABS (computer) module monitors wheel speed and the brake pedal switch. If it sees one or more wheels lock it modulates brake pressure through an electronically actuated valve/pump arangement (located under the master cylinder) to reduce brake pressure until the locked wheel starts to spin agian.

The most common ABS codes are wheel sensor codes. On these vans the front sensors will get contaminated with metal from the brake rotors wearing. When the metal builds up enough the sensor can no longer see the stator in the brake rotor and set a sensor code. You only need to clear the sensor to fix this problem. It only takes a few minutes to jack up the van, pull the wheel and brake rotor to reach the sensor. Wipe it clean, spray it with some brake clean and you're done. This is also an opportunity to inspect the sensor's wiring to see if it has been damage. Its common for the wiring to rub against the rotor or wheel and wear through the insulation.

Clubwagon...thanks that will get me started!! I have several problems I am working on so it will be awhile until I get to this. I just finished putting on the clockspring so the horn/cruise/airbags are working...thanks to all on this site that helped me walk through that.

You are welcome. Hey, my cruise control quit working about a month ago and it looks like its that damned clockspring. How was that job? I haven't done one on these vehicles. It doesn't look like too big a deal but I don't want to f'up the airbag.

I unhooked battery for 24 hours before taking the airbag off. It is held onto the steering wheel with 4 metric nuts..deep socket. Once you undo the nuts then it comes forward and it is one connector to detach the air bag. From there it isn't bad but you do have to take off the cowing on top/bottom of steering column. And you have to drop the steering column down(four bolts). There are about 5 connectors to detach and you have to pull the keylock since one connector goes inside it. Clockspring cost me $85 at Ford...Napa/AutoZone didn't handle this item.

Wow, thanks! That doesn't sound too bad. How about taking the cover off the airbag for access to it.

My '94 has 4 wheel abs as well. I've never had a problem with the front sensors because I clean them as Steve mentioned every time I do brake service.

To the best of my recollection, the sensors are held in by a single 10mm bolt that can be accessed from the backside without removing the rotor. It?s been a while since I?ve worked on them though. The sensors are magnetic so they will accumulate metallic particles from semi metallic pad and rotor wear.

Many people have reported trouble with the rear axle speed sensor in the past, but you need to see what code you have before replacing parts.

The airbag comes out as an assembly...simply remove the four nuts from the back side and then pull it forward. Of course you have to unplug the connector.
