Ok i have an 83 f250 w/ a 6.9 v8, i was wondering if i could get the sound that a gas v8, dualled out could get and what mufflers i should use.All my buddies drive fords n chevy's with dual flowmaster 40's would i be able to do the same with my truck?? or would the heat mess up the muffler, i need feedback asap, cuz im asking for exhaust for my christmas gift from my parents. THANKS ALOT
Get a 3.5-4.0 exhaust system with a flow through muffler, power and sound will be improved, if you had a turbo no mufler needed......diesels love free exhausts no need for back pressure.
It's going to sound diffferent than a gas V8, but it can sound really good. Basically, the less restriction the better. Myself, I think I'd skip the mufffler, but that's just me.
I used to had a straigt pipe but the local authorities put an end to that but damn it sounded good. Then I went to true dual 3" into 5" stacks and it was honestly the best sounding exhaust you ever heard but a little loud in the cab and I would have gotten another citation from the local authorities so I put on some flowmaster 40s. Sounds real good but not near as good sounding as straight pipes but I can now hear the radio.
If you dont have a turbo then run dual 3" w/ no crossover. Even without mufflers it shouldnt be a noise problem in the cab, just with the popo.
yah i used to just dump out under the cab, but yah you cant get inspected without the muffler, thats why i love that little pipe ford put on there, jus olts right on before the muffler and right off, it was loud when you floored it but when idling its was fine, but yah my parents made me put it back on, I cant afford any tickets so yah. I want to run sumthing big, with a deeper tone, like a 4 inch sidepipe or maybe 5 i jus gotta get the materials and see how much its gunna cost, I'D LOVE A TURBO, anyone know what kind to get and how much itd cost me?
I just had the stock muffler replaced with a glass pack. ($85 parts and labor)
Sounds much better and feels a bit punchier too. From what I've read here the stock Ford muffler is a baffle type and causes major restrictions.
I built my own muffler, it isn't exactly straight through, but it is high flow all the same. I have the original y-pipe modified to smooth out the flow and then dump into a single 3" to the muffler, 3.5" from the muffler out to a 4" outlet, sounds good but not overbearing. Never will sound like a gasser, but it sounds good in it's own way, when I stand on it, it is very noticeable, but nice tone when not getting on it.
yah, i had a straight pipe, and it was really poppy i guess you could say, it was somewhat annoying, high pitched, would a bigger sise pipe make it sound better?
There are a couple guys here in town, one with a single 40 series(3") and one with true 2.5" duals, they both saw no increase the one guy went to glasspacks and now has seen a good increase and loves the sound. Another guy has a International 4700 with 2.5" duals and stacks, running 12" glasspacks and has been warned about 6 times by the cops for the noise. You actually have to plug your ears when he takes off from a light. So yeah, single 4" with a straight through or true duals and straight through. Also, the 4" can be had alot cheaper from a local shop with a magnaflow muffler then buying the Banks kit usually.
