Stock muffler too loud? 1951 V8 F5

I have a 51 F5 (Flathead V8). I needed a new muffler so I bought a repo one from Dennis Carpenter. This was I am sure F1 specs. Ok, so now my question, should the mufflers be the same F1-F5? My truck is very loud, almost like no muffler at all with the Dennis installed. No long tail pipe installed. Just ends after the muffler. Do not love it.

Anyone advise to just get a modern muffler and install it? Would that make a difference? Is there a certian one that you use and like? Thanks.

Howdy,

When I was getting my F600 running the first time with the 239 Y, I just went over to NAPA and got a generic sort of muffler... Something for a 60's pickup with a v-8 and single exhaust...... I don't think it was more than $20 or so and it sounded great. pretty quiet too.

The 53 with 239 flathead has no muffler, pipe is about 3' past the engine where it ends. Its a bit loud but think I'm going to leave it that way!

A tail pipe will make any muffler quieter. I'd put on one it.
