The outside temperature is getting down to 30 degrees (and below) in the morning and the mule don't wanna wake up. I had to use some ether to get her to fire up these last couple of days. Last night I dug out the engine heater plug out of the front bumper and plugged her in this morning for about 40 minutes. What a difference! She fired right up. Last year I was able to park her in the garage during the winter, so it wasn't as noticeable. Gotta clean out the garage and lay down some new hay for her soon so I don't have to freeze my nads just to warm her up!
I've started my PSD down to about 20deg without plugging in. Sounds like you have a GPR or GP problem -also, Have the Bats load tested & check the fuel bowl heater to see if it's working. Not sure if the CA trucks get an intake heater or not - something to look for as well. Be careful with the ether - ether + diesels sometimes= BOOM!
See the hard to start winter thread @ the top of the forum for some good tips on how to fix it for good.
roaky81, let us know what you find out. Mine will start but runs ruff for a few minutes. I was told that it is the value in the elbow of the exhaust. I'm not sure what that means.
Just replaced my GPR this afternoon, no more cold start problems for me. Does seem like alot of people around here are having their GPR go out too. Common problem in colder climates where the GPR is really getting a work out I suppose.
Hey Badford99, when you would start your pickup would it fire off and then do a "Romp Romp Romp" about 3 times and then quit. Mine will do that a couple of times and then it will start up and run fine, I may need to replace my gpr also.
OK, I'll bit. What in the world is a GPR and where is it located? I assume it is a relay. I just had my Cam Pos Sensor replaced. $189.50 for the part and $60.00 labor. The truck runs good.
They told me that the Banks Power Elbow would help alot. Thanks BadFord99 for having that listed. It helped me remember.

It did that last year, ended up that about half of my glow plugs were bad. When my GPR went bad, it would take forever and a day to get er started. One way you can test your GPR is to use a volt meter, and check for 12v dc at the two large terminals. Have someone turn the key on while you have the meter hooked up, if it reads 12v then you just have a few bad glow plugs. Another way you can check is by touching both terminals with a screw driver for about 10-15 seconds with the key on, then crank er over. If she starts right up, its your GPR.
TWolf- The gpr is your glow plug relay. It is located on the top side of the engine, passenger side of the valley between the fuel filter housing and turbo intake Y-pipe. Also, the Power Elbow did seem to make a bit of difference, opened up her breathing a bit.

That was replaced just after we bought the truck. it wouldn't start and when it did. Man did it smoke. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it that day.

I fired my truck up yesterday morning for the first time all week. Outside air was probably 30 degrees and the truck went "romp romp romp" but never died. It ran a little rough for about 10 seconds then smoothed out and started to idle up on its own.
I've never had any starting problems before, generally it fires up pretty quick, even yesterday morning it fired quick but did the romp romp romp.
Does anyone have any pics of where the pgr is located? Also, if I have a bad gp how do I determine which one it is or would it be recommended to replace all of them?
