Hmmm.....cold soaked?

Parked my 03 F250 6.0 (80K on her) at the airport last Sunday morning and jumped on the airplane(s) for a week in Denver. While I was gone, it snowed a little and obviously the temps dropped into the low 30's / high 20's.

I got back today (Thursday) at @3PM...temps were in the low 50's. I started her up and MAN OH MAN she didn't like not being plugged in while I was gone. She blue smoked...that's normal, but for about 3 or 4 minutes it sounded like she was running on about 5 cylinders. About the 4 or 5 minute point she smoothed out and seemed to run normal.

My question is, should I be concerned?

Normally when temps drop down this low I plug her in overnight and she fires right up in the mornings....regardless of temps. So like any concerned parent...I'm wondering if I should be concerned or this normal for leaving one outside in the cold for several days and then just firing her up.

At 3pm at this time of year, where you are, its not the temperature and the fuel should be fine. Mine started regularly at -10C (thats 14F) without chugging last winter without being plugged in, and our overnight lows were a lot more severe.

I'm leaving it unplugged tonight and I'll try starting her again in the morning.

Once it warmed up today, she ran normally.

it's in the... 20's and 30's in the morning here. i ain't got no where to plug her in yet, and she chugs and chuffs a bit for a few minutes and smooths out, and everything's normal after 5 minutes or so (except for the vibration in the front end that never seems to have gotten fixed late last winter. went away when it was warm, but now it's back).

My 6.0 used to do that when it was cold last winter. Did it all winter. When it was cold it would litterally sound like it was running on half the cylinders and the dieseling sound was louder. over the summer my FICM went along with an oring leaking. After having it fixed it hasn't done it since. Ive started it in some below freezing temps and not had any problems. Not to say thats what it is, just letting you know my experience.

Mark, I have the same question...how would I know if I have the inductive heat flash? I'm sure I have the buzz flash because of the buzzing sound while waiting for the glow plug light to go out.

Ryan, thanks for your input...I'm hoping that like your case, it was just not getting her plugged in that makes the difference. Once you do plug her in, the difference is night and day!

To Msgtg,

The buzz flash buzzes the injectors upon engine shutdown, not startup!

i couldn't find the plug on my 04, added a heater to the lower radiator hose for this year. Do all of them have a block heater?? Had a stock one on my 7.3. Even had a stock Motorcraft one on a 86 mustang convertable that was produced for canada. (kinda ironic to have a block heater on a RWD v8 conv)

Pretty sure they all have the block heaters, but not all have the cords. You can buy the cord, IIRC, from International, ebay has them, Ford has them but they are more $$ than anywhere else. Maybe someone else will chime in, mine came with one and I'm going by what I remember reading on here. HTH!

I believe the Inductive Heat Flash came out around Jan 2007. If the dealership has had the vehicle more recently than that, the upgrade - if you got it - should show up in an OASIS report. However, mine does not show up on the OASIS report - apparently because I took the vehicle in and said I had no complaints, just wanted the flash upgrade (I guess at that point it was not a warranty repair isssue).

I wonder what the current draw would be when the inductive heating was going on? This may be a way to tell. I have access to a clamp on ammeter - I may investigate this. There may be other ways, but I am not aware of them.

Hmmm, and all this time I thought the buzz before the start was the buzz flash. Thanks 69cj for the info!

Well yesterday I went out and fired it up. It ran rough again for about 2 to 3 minutes and then she smoothed right out. After she smoothed out, she went into high idle mode and all was normal from that point on.

At this point, I'm assuming that it's just the cold that making her run rough. Thanks for the input guys. It sure is nice having a back up staff like you guys!!!!
