KOEO Test codes

Hey Guys,

I just pulled some codes from my truck as every once and awhile the CEL comes on then goes off. No rhyme or reason for it coming or going as far a s driving conditions go.

So I turned on the key, heard the fuel pump prime, then shut off, saw the light flicker, then started writing the codes. Here's what i recorded in short hand:

1 = blink
. = pause

11.1.11.1111.11.1.11.1111.1.111.1.1111.1.1111.1.11 11.1

From what i can understand the codes i am getting are as follows:

21,24,21,24,13,14,14,14

I'm assuming the doubles are repeats, and the 2nd to last code i messed up recording on.

21 = ECT out of self test range 0.3 to 3.7 volts.

This makes sense because the truck hasn't been started since last night and it is very cold out. I shouldn't worry about that right?

24 = ACT sensor out of self test range 0.3 to 3.7 volts.

Same as above, no reason to worry correct??

13 = Cannot control RPM during ER Self-Test low RPM check.

I didn't have the engine running so???

14 = Two or more successive erratic Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP) pulses occurred, resulting in a possible engine miss or stall.

This one is from Continues Memory according to the site, so I'm assuming it was stored from previously. I haven't had any problems with the trucks running or misfiring.

I followed the instructions of fordfuelinjection.com for the KOEO test.

This is my first time pulling coeds so if you could help me understand them that would be great.

BTW, the truck runs fine, i just was curious if there were any codes.

Thanks,
Mike

First of all, Welcome to FTE!

If the truck runs fine I wouldnt worry about there being codes in the computer. Do me and yourself a favor. Take the negative battery cable off the battery and let it sit for 15 minutes or a half hour. Hook it all back up and take it for a drive for about 15 minutes so that the computer can relearn the engines actions. Then do the test again.

As to your answer about code 21, That refers to your engine coolant temp sensor. I dont think thats anything to worry about unless you have a CEL.

Code 24 is Air Charge temp sensor. Again, nothing really to worry about I dont think if there is no CEL light.

Code 13 is nothing to worry about, since its only valid under KOER (Key off engine running)

Code 14 kinda bothers me. The only thing I can come up with off the top of my head is that maybe a crank sensor (if your engine has one, which Im sure it does. Im having a dumb attack) has failed previously.

I forgot to mention earlier that you can run a test with the engine running. I believe it also tells you how to in fordfuelinjection.com. Just make sure its warm, and after a couple blinks, goose the throttle real quick and turn the wheel a half turn or so.

Hopefully I've helped you a little bit! If not then sorry! lol

The best resource for your troubles is Alldatadiy.com. This site has the trouble codes as well as the step by step pinpoint tests to find the bad parts. It is only 15 dollars for a year for your vehicle. Tons of really useful information. The same resource as used in shops around the country.

PS One of the first steps for troubleshooting trucks is to record the codes, clear them and see if you can recreate them. These may be old codes that aren't really a problem.

I think you're getting a 31 and a 41 instead of 13 and 14. Don't forget that there is one separator blink between the active codes and stored memory codes. The ACT and ECT codes will come up if you didn't warm up the truck before running the test. This might help in counting the blinks:

if you didn't warm up the engine before running the test, you will get the ECT and air temp sensor codes...and that is actually a good thing.
