I had a question posed to me today about a 63 or 64 Fairlane with a 289 in it. The breather sticker labeled it as a "289 SPECIAL". Has anyone ever heard of a 289 Special and if so what makes it different from a standard 289 or 289HP? Thanks for any info.
1963 was the first year for the 289 and they were scarce. If you know the engine code in the VIN,a D code was the 4V 9to1 comp-the C code was always the std.2V-and of course old Ford guys remember the K code 271HP hipo
Not sure about a '64 Fairlane. Is this a 4bbl motor with solid lifters? That would be the 271 hp (rated) hi-po motor.
If it's a 2bbl, I saw some '68 Mustangs with some kind of "special" notes on them that had a larger 2bbl on them.
Somewhere on this site is posted the CFM for the various 2bbls, and how to tell them apart. There is a number in a clock-like circle cast into the carb. 1.10 to 1.23 are the numbers, each indicating (I think) the diameter of the venturi. Larger is better. I used a 1.23 (think I am remembering correctly) off a 390 on my 289 with good results.
