289 questions
i have just aquired a 68 galaxie 500 2 door hard top. with a 289. moter has no heads on it . if i decide to rebild this what heads and intake will fit. and are the 289s any good of a moter?

289's are great motors. Don't put it in an F350 and expect to haul gravel, but in a lighter rig, they are great.
Read up on the rebuild tips. I hope you are going to go thru this motor, as slapping heads on it after it has sat open for any llength of time would be risky.
Make sure your block is sound, keep the stock bore if you can or go .030 over.
Get the better main caps and the best fasteners you can. Beef the rods up to the bigger rod bolt, or get aftermarket jobs.
Upgrade your ignition and then decide if it's a low rev or high rev job you want.
289's are perfectly happy to lug around with the right carb and cam. The stronger lower end will keep things happy down there.
In the day, Shelby said no higher than 7000 rpm on the hi-po motors he sold.
I saw a guy running a 289 to 10,000 drag racing a few years ago. Maybe he wasn't using used 2 bbl model parts....
Anyway, there are several how to books for this engine. Read a couple and build on.
Or, turn it into a 302 or stroker 347.....
Generally, what's good for a 302/5.0 is good for a 289.

thanks guys. i am going to rip this moter right down to the bone.
i am doing a full restoration on the hole car so would like to keep it mostly ariganal. maby a little moter work etc
