code 14 pip questions

I have 91 ranger with 4.0 litre and it's been running good lately. Went to drive it and engine started bucking real bad, as soon as I step on gas pedal. It idles fine, maybe a little rich. I took post off battery to clear old codes, and one that keeps popping up now is code 14-pip circuit koeo-continuous???. All pass codes with koer. Checked the wiring and plug, it looked good.

Do the described symptoms sound like bad sensor? Is this a fairly common problem, and is there more to the circuit than crank sensor and first few feet of wiring? Any way to test crank sensor itself?

Thanks, Bob.

I unplugged and reconnected all the connections I could find in engine compartment and truck is running well again. Probably good till next heavy snow fall and -40 in middle of nowhere.

Thanks Ken. I doubt this was a permanent fix. The haynes book is basically useless for that sort of thing.

A 14 code means the computer has sensed a problem with the Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP) signal, otherwise known as the Crankshaft Position (CKP) signal. On the early 4.0L EDIS systems, there is a seperate ignition control module (ICM) which processes the PIP signal (among other things) for the ignition system. So in term of components, you're looking at either the ICM or the CKP sensor, or their circuits.

Thanks for narrowing it down. I wasn't sure if coil pack or any other components were involved. I should have grabbed some spares at pick apart to test with. Still okay for time being, keeping fingers crossed.

I did notice some raw gas on fuel pressure regulator side of intake valley the other day. Felt regulator and it was wet on backside. Has been good since.

Is it possible fuel pressure could drop and engine die and recover so fast it would generate a code 14 failure? It was "bucking violently" at time code came up.

Thanks, Bob.

Fuel pressure dropping could cause the engine to lose power, then as pressure is restored, instantly regain that power and go right along, causing "bucking". But I have no idea about it popping a 14, that's not my speciality honestly.
Good idea though, could very well be it.

Low fuel pressure wouldn't set a PIP code. A PIP code indicates two successive erratic pulses occured, look at the TFI, ignition coil, plugs, wires, distributor or PIP sensor.

I'm still having problem. At least when it happens I can drive it. It works well under about 1600rpm. Anything after that and it starts bucking. Sometimes works great=problem nonexistent. No more raw fuel anywhere near regulator.

Ken00, if your offer for pinpointing code 14 still stands I would be greatful. Will send you PM.

Thanks, Bob.

Ken00: Thanks, I received pinpoint test. I don't have b.o.b., but will pick up multimeter next days off. Lots of stuff in test I hadn't checked yet, so just maybe...

Now truck seems to run good cold, then when restarted, or maybe just when it warms up problem starts. Can't wait to get multimeter to check values. Will update then.

Thanks again, Bob.

Some people back probe the connectors with a pin but you have to be VERY careful not to touch anything else or you can kill the PCM.

I have been stuck in camp, so lots of time to play with truck, and no access to $$$$parts. I put the large a.c. fuse in ignition fuse's spot (on p.s. inner fender well) and truck is running perfect again. Been to town a few times and local, and still working perfect. Hard to believe it was a bad fuse? But truck has run perfect since change was made. I guess only time will tell.

I was getting a hard momentary pull as soon as brakes were applied, then straighten out. One of the front rubber lines was almost plugged solid. Now I can step on brakes with no hands on wheel on icy roads and it brakes straight instead of trying to do 180's. It's almost like driving a normal truck again.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
