I have been looking at the hedman headers that fit 1975-1979 f-150's but I assume they will fit my truck a 1965 mercury with a transplanted 302 and 3 speed converted to floor. My question is, will these headers fit with only minor modification. Willl it clear the p/s steering box and crossmember. Even with it being a manual tranny. Also what kind of heat protection should I provide my starter with? Thanks for the info.
Yes the 73-79 hedman hedders will work very good! I never had any trouble
with heat on the starters, and the only crossmember trouble I have had was
the trans crossmember the pipes have to have a sharp bend down or up to miss it.
And if it does miss it, they almost always end up rattling. I have came up with
my '' cure'', its notches in the crossmember!
We have a '66 F100 which we just replaced the old 302 conv with a '90 merc 302. We used the Hedmann headers for the later Gen F100. No problems on ours with the power steering box at all, cleared it fine. Problem we had was on the other side. We are running a C4. TO get the rt side headers to go in and clear the edge of the bellhousing, had to grind a bit off the edge of the bell housing around the starter and then also cut a small notch out of the frame. Once that was done and they were in place, there was plenty of clearance.
THe headers clear everything fine, but as noted above, its the tranny crossmember that becomes the issue when you go to run an exhaust back off of them. They pretty much aim directly at the crossmember. Don't have the welding ability of modify our crossmember ourselves, so will probably end up getting pipes bent to clear it
Have a 65 F100 with 70 Torino 302ci. Made the power steering upgrade, kept the T18 four speed and used my original column; I found a steering shaft that had already been shortened. Installed set of long tube 'Hooker' headers for 73-79, and experienced same installation issues as member Charliehorse. Solved the crossmember problem with a set of 'Hedman' offset header extentions. I like member Pro-streets design and would get estimate from local weld shop and go that route if not too expensive. The headers were not a problem using the Ford/Saginaw power steering box; however, the Bendix p/s box is shorter and wider so header installation can be a problem. Suggest using Ford/Saginaw box if decide to go with the floor shift.

Thanks (daveengelson)
I have dealt with this issue with the trans crossmember for years on many
different years of trucks 65-66, 67-72, 73-79 and I think that I have it figured
out! I order the hedman hedders (ext) pipes that you are using ,and might I
say they were the best answer to the issue untill I made my notched C/member,the only reason I still made the notched C/member is the hedman
hedders (Ext) pipe on the pass side sill rattled on the C/member, but I did
run mine on a 77 where the came out low (below) because the mufflers would
not fit up in the frame. (Tucked)
P.S If you do get a price on getting the notched C/member made at a weld
shop, Please post how much so I will know if it was worth making .( Time )

Yeah, thanks for the info, Dave! Just found them at SUmmitt, in-stock, $21.95! Just what we needed..........unless Pro-street thinks his time and effort would be worth, say, $25. j/k
