you need to check for codes, but sounds like the Vehicle speed sensor, which is mounted in the top of the rear axle (87-96 i think). What year is your truck? you need to give us more info to work with.
Masseysbronco has it pegged then. VSS failure. Its in the top of the rear differential housing held in with a single bolt. Check the connection to it first and the wiring harness nearby for abrasions or other damage. If you find nothing, you can remove the sensor and trying wiping it down and re-installing it to see if the "cleaning" was all it needed. But from the way you described it, it up and quit on you or something came up and severed the wire(s) to it.
Pulling the codes won't hurt either, this way you can either confirm or deny that the VSS is indeed the culprit.

I have a speedometer question...I know when you change rear gears in a Mustang you can change the gear on the speed sensor so the speedometer is correct. Is it possible to do the same on the Bronco when the tire size has been increased? I just bought a 89 Bronco, A/T, 302, 3.55 limited slip gear with 31x10.5 on the stock wheels. I want to change wheels and go up to a 32x11.5 like my old 88 Bronco, but I know the speedo is already off 5 mph...is this possible?
Actually, whreq, the reason your ABS light is out now is because when you disconnected the battery to fix the connections to it, you allowed the ABS computer to reset. This cleared the error code that was generated when the VSS failed. To clear the code youwould have had to disconnect the battery.

On your 89, yes, you can and HAVE TO regear the speedo to compensate. With 92 and newer Bronco's and F-sereis you need to reprogram the PSOM.
Unfortunately, all of the trucks I have dealt with are PSOM-equipped. I do know that Ford made speedometer drive gears in different colors depending upon the number of cogs (teeth) they had but beyond that I've little experience actually doing the swap. Some of the guys here have done what you are needing to do to yours. I'm certain someone can give you some better insight than I can.
Thanks anyways, i know the colors have to do with the # of teeth. But I am not sure if i need to go bigger or smaller...like you said, hopefully somebody else has delt with this and will post shortly. Thanks again!
