Hi, i have a 1999 F-250 7.3 and the water pump quit on me is that something i can fix myself or should i take it to a pro? this is my first diesel by the way
How did it quit? That seems rather strange that it would lock up. Anyway, it's not too bad to change. There's lots of articles on the proper procedure to change one. I pulled my radiator out to change mine. Gave me a little more room to work but I know other guys have left their radiator in. The biggest problem I had was removing the fan blade from the shaft. It's on there pretty tight. I ordered a pump from one of the sponsors of this site plus I ordered a 203 degree thermostat also. It's suppose to be better for the diesel's to run a little hotter. Do a search - you'll find some good write-up's.
I would call Bob Riley and get a pump, 203* thermo, and billet housing. The stock thermostat housing is a stamped steel pos. Bob seems to have the best prices on a new OEM pump.
Changing the waterpump is not bad. Fan clutch nut can be a pain. Big thing is proper length bolt in right place and the don't use Ford manual torque. You will snap off the bolts. 18 lbs-ft of torque for the bolts.
okay yeah i repleced it just went down to autozone and got one for about $300 made by cardone i know i should of looked around but i was in a hurry and my friend was helping me and dropped the fan and chipped the blade so i bought a new fan for 70$ so thanks for the help guys.
Yes ..... Watch For Leaks ...... Mainly At The Thermocouple Housing If You Did Not Replace With A New One When You Changed Out Your Pump.
They Are Notorious For Leaking Evan When The Old One Still Looks Good.
I Had To And Many Others Had To Go Back After The Fact And Go Buy One Because Of Leaks There.
