I have a Mutt engine. 84 Short Block and tining cover with 89 heads. My water pump just cracked. It was a 84 water pump. Will a 89 water pump fit on the 84 timing cover?
It depends on the rotation direction of the water pump. Water pumps on serpentine belt drive systems were reverse rotation; v-belt drives were standard rotation. If both the 84 and 89 are the same rotation direction, it should work fine. If not, you'll have to install the timing cover from the '89.
The serpentine on mine seems to drive the water pump the same direction as the crank. It uses 2, 6 rib belts. One for the alternator and smog; the other for the water pump, AC, and power steering. I had the 84 water pump on it and running before it cracked at the heater return port when i tried to tighten the pipe fitting a little too much.
Rock Auto lists the 84 pump good through 92, but the part # for the 89 pump is different and fits 85-89 f350. Both are Motorcraft pumps.
I guess I should have asked what engine you're working on - I had a small block on my mind, but it sounds like you have a 460. Are you able to physically compare the 89 and the 84 that was on the engine?
Sorry, yeah it's a 460. I got rid of the other block so I really don't have anything to compare with. I think the major difference after doing some research was the use of 8 bolt holes in the later pumps to acommodate some heavy duty application. I ended up ordering the 89 pump so we will see if it works.
