headlight buzzer

Should my 1982 F150 have a headlight warning buzzer? I can't figure out if it's just not working, it has and ignition key warning buzzer.

They were an option in 1980 to 1983. standard after that.

Does your truck have underdash courtesy lights, glove box light, or ash tray light?

If not then you probably dont have the buzzer because it is included in the wiring harness extention that powers all of these.

If you do have these lights then your buzzer has probably wore out, or you have a problem with the driver door switch, or wiring between. could also be the wiring between the light switch and the buzzer as well. It could also be unplugged.

First off I would replace the buzzer by substitution, should be able to get one out of any 1980 to 1983 higher end truck at a wrecker for cheap.

then If that didn't help then I'd check the door switch, then the wiring.

P.S. if your truck doesn't have one, you can have one installed by buying the wiring harness extentions with the ash tray light and all the other lights mentioned, with the buzzer and just plug it in to the truck. Depending on what year you get the harness off of, you may have to switch some wires around in the plugs. Very easy to do, and no splicing. Just make sure you get both plugs off the donor truck.

Hope this helps.

There are also numerous aftermarket kits that just hook up readily.
I recently bought a GM kit on ebay.
Ford also probably offers one.
It sure is a worthwhile feature.
I had a 71 VW that had it, always wondered why all cars didn't have it....low cost/high value.

OK thanks, my truck has none of these lights, no ash tray, under dash or glove box. looks like I'll have to go aftermarket.

Why would you want the buzzer? I disconnected the one in my 96 'cause the noise pissed me off!!!! It also buzzed when the door was open. I just remember to turn off the lights and close the door.

On the 1980 to 1982, 1983, the headlamp warning buzzer only operates, if your lights are on, and the driver door opens. If your lights are off, the buzzer doesn't sound, if you open the door.

There are laws in california, that require you to turn your headlights on even in bright sunshine. They are called Daylight Headlight Sections. then there are the laws that require headlamps on in the rain, etc too...

I don't know how many times I have had a dead battery because of leaving my headlamps on during the day, for this reason. since I installed the headlamp warning buzzer, it hasn't happened once. I love it.

I did however disconnect the Fasten Belt buzzer, that one is annoying... just unplug the connection from the seatbelt behind the seat. That way the light on the dash still works without the buzz.

And on the 1984 to 86 with the key in ignition, door ajar, BS, that can be disconnected too without disableing the headlamp warning buzzer as well. Just remove the appropriate wire from the buzzer and tape or shrinkwrap the end.

The only buzzard I have in my truck (81f150) is the one for the seatbelt.

The Headlamp Buzzer was a option extra on the 1980 to 1983 vehicles. Standard after that.

I installed a factory buzzer, when I installed the Courtesy lights, Ash Tray Light, and Glove Box light, in the truck. the harness extention for the group, plugs right in to the main harness.

If you look in your truck just under the heater controls, you can see the wirers and the two "empty" plugs for the Digital clock, and courtesy lights, buzzer attached to the metal bracket.

Get the harnesses from a 1980 to 1983 pickup, with the buzzer and lights, (and digital clock if desired) the harness will plug right into these two plugs.

Using a 1983 harness extention on a 1982 earlier requires removing the plugs off the wires of the main harness and combining the two plugs into the one big plug you remove off the donor truck. or vise versa, using the 1980 to 1982 on the 83...

It's really very simple, and no splicing of wires.
