straight pipe in 4.9L?
straight pipe in 4.9L?
hey guy's I have a 1991 f150, and I was wondering if anybody knows what it would sound like having a straight pipe ran from the cat. converter over the rear axle, and dumped before it exits the side?
ok dump the cats,.
I have an rebuilt 300 in my 85 with an RV cam and no emmisions equiptment, with a 3" all the way back, with the cam, people say it sounds like a pulling tractor idleing around the parkinglot, and idk what's wrong with ya'lls 300's but mine sounds like a bigblock when i stand on it, loud as crap.
My friends call it the dumptruck, if that hints at anything.
i'd compare it to a 6-71 Detorit going down the road, most compare it too a cummins, but it revs too much to be a cummins in my opioion, ok a cummins about to blow at 3200rpm. 3k is as far as i take her though
To me it sounds good and all the old timers that remember hot rodding I6's give me compliments.
it's all in taste

Does anyone run flows on their I-6? I'd rather have flows, but I don't know what it would sound like...any suggestions? I wanna make mine sound like a V8
col flashman's got a flow on his 300. sounds good too.
outta check out his sound clip.
Hate to break your heart, but there's no way to truely make it sound like a V8, don't know why u'd really want too.
not bashin V8's, i got a 600horse 351W in my 90 Ranger street/strip truck that i'm workin on finishin, hard bein a 17 year old and buildin a competitive race truck on ur own. just takes longer.
and i got a 302 HO out of a 93 Cobra, goin in my brothers truck.
But..........i love the sound of a cammed high compr. full tilt straightpiped V8, in something meant to go fast, can't stand the sound of them stock tho, just me. the sound kinda trashy stock, atleast 350's do. All the guys around here think that their 350's with dual exhaust is loud. Then i fire my cammed straight piped 300 up, the cocky ones are still around till i blip it, and drive off. Loud man, i gotta good friend with a 98 dodge wanted to hook chains, which i won't do. But untill he heard me fire it up, said it sounds too much like his dads tractor to mess with. his ex gf.......now guess who's.....was like u put a tractor engine in your truck.
But hey i'm a teenager, like loud trucks, fast girls, and drivin 67 on the interstate with earplugs in.
So if you do it ditch the cat....if you don't have emisisons.
and don't go dual.....1bank means it should have 1 pipe.
It will sound like a TRUCK. ha, ever hear a straight piped cummins in a dodge? like that minus the clatter and turbo whine.
Kens.......I agree, love those 2 stroke Detroits, awwwww my favorite all time sounding diesel.......i want one...used to drive a 8V71 for my neighbor on his farm.
But in time.....too young now.
But Nate......just make sure it's a good quality exhaust, like anything else, or it will sound like it rolled out of the local trailer park. A good Flowmaster, or a good exhaust.
I made mine, but i had the time and knew how to use a exhaust shop tubing bender, got 65 bucks in it total.
so any ideas on what you are gonna do yet?

I'm thinking about Flowmaster 40's with dual pipes, dumping down after it goes over the rear axle...what do yall think about that? I know I sound like a complete newb, but really I'm not. Just don't know much about exhuasts :/
