Question pressure

Anyone know what the fuel pump pressure should be on a 360 cid motor 2 bbl I installed a 4 LBS pump and wounder if its keeping up the clear filter before the pump right by the tank never fills up the clear filter by the carb only has a trickel??

Have you put a pressure gage on the fuel line on output side of fuel pump to see if you are really getting the 4 psi? We used to unhook the fuel line from the carb, ground the coil wire, and crank the engine over to check fuel pump output. Should give a good squirt of gas about 1-2 feet each stroke of the pump. A good check if you don't have a pressure gauge.
Does the engine run ok otherwise? Surging at mid-upper speed can be fuel starvation.
Don't know if the fuel line inlet in gas tank has a filter, if it does I have seen them plug up badly. I have seen kinks in the rubber fuel hose under the cab below the drivers side door - kinks were bad enough to limit flow. Only had to replace the hose and bend the metal lines a little so rubber hose had nice loop with no kinks. Follow the metal fuel line from tank to pump and see if theres a restriction.
I saw a guy ready to spend big bucks to rebuild his alternator, only I grabbed the fan belt, it was so loose. Thats all it took to fix.

My book shows 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 for all the FE/FTs. I agree with mtnmax, stick with the simple things.

"clear filter before the pump right by the tank" Is this an electric pump? Both pump and strainer should be mounted below the level of the tank.

I had a clear filter on the pressure side of my (new) mechanical pump. Thing never filled up, barely trickled at idle, didn't seem to flow that fast with the engine tached up. Truck ran like gangbusters.

I used a clear filter as a strainer right next to the tank (mounted low) on a car with a mechanical pump. After driving the filter was always full. Every 10 to 12 days I had to clean rust out of the filter. Used the hose from the tank to rinse off the element, plenty of flow there.

We all know the FEs are real gas sippers, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Ok guys went to a 5.5 to 9 lbs electric pump while blowing out the lines I found out my gas cap had no vent! Do you think that might have made it vapor lock? Well off to houston will read posts monday!
P.S. the clear fuel filter now fills up!

DOH!!!!!

Yeah, those pesky details can make all the difference.

The gas cap is an easy one to overlook. That's why I usually check. LOL
