Why is it that these old trucks seem to have better doors than the newer stuff?
Ive got Fords ranging from my dad's '68 to my F.I.L's 02 F-350
These older doors shut so much better than the newer ones, even the rusted parts truck I just brought home has better doors. The new ones suck royally.
Well you know the saying "they don't make em like they used to"
My 72 doors slose nice. The slightest push from the outside and it closes smothly and tightly. My 83 had to have the doors slammed to shut tight and my new 87 toyta winter beater dosen't shut as nice as my 72. I'm goign to do a resto on the 72 and almost bon't want to take the doors off it in fear they will never close as well as they do now. Also if you look the hinges are of a differant design and that may aid in how they work so well.
I also think that it is hinge-related. My '72 has cab and door rot and the drivers door can still be latched fully with a little nudge. The hinges on these trucks seem way over-built.
I notice that with my 69 F-100, easy close, 1 finger of pressure. Same with a 76 F-250 that I had years ago. Ford made the most solid doors back then. Even my 66 Mustang, not the sturdiest uni-body ever made, definitely not the thickest steel ever used, still closes with 1 finger. There is never any need to slam the door when you are in a classic Ford.
the only old ones that i had trouble shuting were due to strikers trying to stick, or the doors have been taken off and re-installed wrong ,, was just as simple as a few drops of oil,or a few minutes adjusting the doors
The Mrs. got used to getting into my '84, you had to kind of half-slam the doors to get them to shut tight.
After that whenever she got into the '69; BANG! I'd have to remind her, "these doors work right, you don't need to slam them."
Yep, the days when things were made to last, not just past the warranty period.
My doors require a pretty good slam but thats because I put on the wrong replacement weatherstripping. Christmas present, good intentions, bad parts guy
hey freejay, why do you say "wrong replacement"? My doors closed perfectly until I put on weatherstripping from Autozone. It looks exactly like the original.
Thats funny. I put the autozone weatherstripping on the 83 that caused the slamming to be needed to be done.
Also I noticed I cannot lock my keys in the 72. If I push down on the lock **** shutting the door pops it back up thus unlocking it. I need to shut the door then lock it with the key. Is this a standard feature for the 67-72 trucks? The only other vehicle I know of with this feature is a VW(I owned an 89 Jetta) but that may have changed over the years also.
ive got a 67 bottom of doors rotted away still close with one finger they really dont make em like they did in the { old days }ode skoo is way koo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My weatherstripping was bought for me as a christmas present and the parts man didn't give them the proper style. I have a set from Dennis Carpenter now and it is much different than my other "new" ones. I had to adjust all my hinges and latches basically as far out as I could just to get the doors to close. And you have to SLAM the rear doors.
